A covered 'entertaining area' out the back of the house is a Patio, if it is enclosed with flyscreen, it is a Screen Enclosure. People have Decks here too, but they are different to a patio, a deck is a wooden floor structure built raised. You could have a patio are over your deck, or maybe build a Pergola.
Shrimp... they are Prawns!! and they do taste very good marinated in Garlic and sweet Chilli sauce then "Thrown on the Barbie!!"
We go on Holidays, not vacations, even school breaks are called School Holidays.
Liquor store, here Slang term is Grog Shop or Bottle Shop.
Pork Roll??? I am assuming it is Ham...?
We also have Polony... I think it is Baloney or Bologna ? Funny tho, in Western Australia it is Polony, the rest of Australia call it Devon...
You guys do "the laundry" We do "the washing"... the laundry is the room where we do the washing...

I'm late jumping in....but.... Yes....A.....I thought it was the witch's t$* that was the coldest , too !! LOL And yes...I actually know how the ground crunches when it is cold ! grinders, hoagies, and subs have always confused me on their differnces....maybe because their is no difference......but......a pork roll sandwich....never in my life have I heard of that ?? And don't even get me started on grits.....I always thought that was a joke....remember...."kiss my grits"....didn't know any acutally ate grits until I saw My Cousin Vinny !! LOL and the pot plant !! We had a mom here at school from Australia....and when we were giving gifts to the teahcers....she said she would get some pot plants.....we all broke out laughing !! And still do refer to them as pot plants now....maybe it'll stick here !!
And A....I didn't bring up the "coke" thing....but I know what they meant......you say to someone " do you want a coke".....what KIND of coke....cola, sprite, rootbeer, etc....coke is their alternate for soda...... Calling sauce "gravy" is just Old Italian....that is what my family does.... The other things to add :
Sprinkles vs. jimmies on ice cream........ movies vs. theatre vs. the nickelodeon

When I first moved to Michigan, I had no idea what a party store was. For those of you that don't know, a party store is a liquor store. Chris

That's funny Chris! You know when I visited NYC years ago I laughed because we'd walk around town and see all these stores that were called "CANDY STORES"..... and I'd look inside and they did NOT sell candy!!! They were HEAD SHOPS!!!! We saw TONS of them... that cracked me up!

Head Shops are also Smoke Shops... but you can by other smoking stuff which IS legal, but most of the stuff is also used for illegal use like with Mary Jane But you can get all sorts of things at a head shop or smoke shop. But when I was in NY in '85, they were "candy shops" LOL A.

Funny thread. Just wanted to chime in and say....
In PA - We also have porkroll sandwiches. A party store - sells party supplies - birthdays, holidays, etc.
A - back to your subdivisions - we say "neighborhood" - "we live in that neighborhood"
We go "food shopping" - not many say to the "grocery store" anymore and we get a "cart"
I think in the US we're all about the same on the Pot Plant, and what it means to us - LOL.
I used to work with a girl from Belgium and one day she came into the lunchroom and announced "the cat's out" - all of us were like "what cat???".... ultimately, she meant the boss...the boss was gone.... ie. "when the cat's away, the mice will play"....

LOL - I didn't know that party store was a regional term . . . I thought all liquor stores were called that!! They are technically convenience stores - maybe that's what everyone else calls them? We do have 'party supply stores' too. Now that I think about it, I guess I always do have to clarify when I'm going to a party supply store to differentiate that from a regular party store. Personally, I love "Grog Shop", I'm going to make every effort to have people start using that term around here. The only place shrimp are referred to as prawns around here is at the higher end restaurants. Jessie
