Hey Everyone Just wanted to give a quick Evan update. He is doing very well these days, we had a bought of pnemonia about a month ago that required a one night hospital stay, it developed from croupe while we were is Disney World. He had a great time in Disney, we actually took him on Dumbo and the dinosaur ride he loved it...He has been growing and gaining weight very well. He is averaging about 3-5 oz a week. We have started him on a glyconutrient supplement and feel that his weight gain and health have been helped by it. I know I posted a while back about it and we were contemplating but we decided to do it (both his Ped. Cardiologist and Pediatrician agreed to try it). He has been taking it for about a month and we have seen a big difference in his eating habits and overall mood. We firmly understand that this supplement is not a cure for DS like some doctors and other proffesionals think, but it just seems like he is benefiting from it all around. I have included the link on the product that we are using, I know it is pricy but a 50 gram bottle of powder will last us about 3 months (1/4 teaspoon twice a day). We have just been mixing it with his food (it is colorless and tasteless). www.mannapages.com/sharethegift/PRDAmbrotose.asp?sMainMenu=ShopNow&sMain2Menu=ProductList&sSubMenu=Products&sSubMenuItem=PRDAmbrotose.asp&sSubMenu2Item=na&sSubMenu3Item=na&UN=shopnow He has started aggresive speech therapy and we are learning sign language with him, he loves to babble and babble (gets that from his mom). They think because he babbles so much, and when you are talking to him he focuses on watching the movements of your mouth that his speech might come easy to him (we are hoping this is the case). Anyway just wanted to update, I am going to upload some more of his pictures to the new photo album site. Take care Clint

Mervie
Evan isn't as old as your young man, but he had problems sleeping when we first brought him home from the hospital.
We bought him a CD player, and to this date we still play mozart, and relaxing outdoor sounds. We lay him in his crib awake and start the music, he settles down and usually goes to sleep pretty quick. I can program his CD player to repeat the CD and we had to do this for a while, now after the first few songs he is fast asleep. Just a suggestion..

Ahh the Wiggles
I believe Evan has the whole DVD collection - he loves them. It is great electronic babysitting, it has gotten to the point where in the morning when he wakes up, he wants to go to the livingroom, sit down and watch a DVD.
I would love to take him to see them, they were just in Shreveport a year ago or so and I am not sure when they are coming back....
Glad to hear our kids enjoy the same things..

Ahh feeding tubes --
Our son Evan had an NG tube from Birth until just before his 1 year birthday. We understand the frustration, we worked hard with Evan finally one day like everything else it clicked. Our doctors had been discussion a G-tube so one weekend while at home he again pulled his tube out and we decided to leave it out, it sure is funny how well they eat when they are hungry.
If you have any questions or need any supplies let me know, we were fortunate to have (own) the kangaroo pump and some other stuff. Email me at swanny297@yahoo.com

Something I thought was pretty interesting:::
New screening requires blood work and ultrasoundThe Associated Press
Updated: 3:17 p.m. ET May 20, 2004PHILADELPHIA - A Philadelphia hospital says it is the first in the nation to offer pregnant women a two-test combination that tells them within an hour after its completion whether their baby has Down syndrome.
The new screening at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital involves a first trimester blood test and an ultrasound and can have test results for Down's syndrome within one hour and as early as 10 weeks into the pregnancy. The first trimester test typically requires a one-week wait for results.
Doctors say the faster turnaround time should give anxious mothers-to-be peace of mind sooner, or allow them more time to decide whether to end the pregnancy.
'Older women will very much be interested in this screening.' - Dr. Stuart Weiner Director of the Division of Reproductive Ultrasound and Genetics, Jefferson University Hospital
For women who would not consider abortion, prenatal screening still is important because babies with Down syndrome, the most common chromosomal birth defect, can need specialized care at delivery that affects hospital choice.
"Older women will very much be interested in this screening," said Dr. Stuart Weiner, director of the Division of Reproductive Ultrasound and the Genetics Program at Jefferson. "But since most Down syndrome babies are being born to women under 35, there's a good argument that it should be available to everyone."
He said four women so far have taken the new fast-result screening route at Jefferson this month.
People with Down syndrome, which is caused by an extra chromosome, are born with mental retardation, physical characteristics including a flat facial profile and upward slanting eyes, and around half have heart defects.
While risk increases with each year of maternal age - from one in 1,200 at age 25 to about one in 300 at 35 - women under 35 give birth to most Down syndrome babies simply because younger women have more babies.
First-trimester screening for Down syndrome is itself fairly new in the United States - tests traditionally have been done here during the second trimester - though women in Great Britain and elsewhere have had access to it for years.
The first trimester test correctly identifies around 85 percent of Down syndrome pregnancies, compared to around 65 percent with traditional second trimester tests, said Dr. Mark I. Evans of the Institute for Genetics and Fetal Medicine at St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York.
He said the fast turnaround time hasn't become widespread because properly reading the ultrasound requires specific training and quality controls that are still developing in many clinics and hospitals.
The blood test looks at levels of a protein called plasma protein A, and a type of the hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin. The ultrasound looks for telltale thickened skin at the back of a fetus' neck.
The National Down Syndrome Society, an advocacy group, cautions that many women who undergo these tests still will get false-positive and false-negative readings and that they should not feel pressured by health care professionals or others about whether or not to continue their pregnancy, according to spokeswoman Suzanne Elliott Armstrong.
Patients at Thomas Jefferson Hospital who get a positive screening result for Down syndrome will be offered on the same day to have genetic counseling and a definitive - and invasive - diagnostic test called chorionic villus sampling, in which cells are withdrawn from the placenta with a needle.

He is sitting in a Leachco tub. We could not get him to sit up very good in our tub so I bought a tub insert. It works great and it is filled with styrofoam beeds so it dries and washes really easy. Here is the link where I got it. www.babybungalow.com/bathnbumper.htmlThanks for checking out our little man -- we know he gets that handsome look from Dad

Janis
We are deeply sorry for your loss of Cariana.
Thank you for sharing your angel with us, I remember some of the advice you gave us during our trying times. We know she is in a perfect place now, watching down and protecting you and your family. She will always have a special place in the heart of everyone in this group.
Cariana has certainly touched a lot lives, and her memory will continue to do this. We are praying for your family, and will support in any way needed.

Hey Everyone Just a quick note to say I have received the newest magnet order, they have changed the style a little bit but they still look great, I have also been able to reduce the price a little as well. cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6529046046Other than that keeping busy. Evan has started to take a couple of steps on his own, so we have been working with him on that. He also has started more aggresive speech therapy, although he is not pronouncing any words he sure likes to babble a lot. Take Care Clint

Go for it - Evan is almost 2.5 and he is probably getting his last RSV shots this year. We were lucky, he has received them from birth until now during the RSV season. One thing to make sure is that it is set up properly through your pediatrician and insurance, it is a very expensive shot if not set up right. Evan weighs just over 20lbs and his shots (he gets 2 each month) are a total of about $2300.00, don't want to get stuck with that bill.
