Denial?

I haven't come across anyone else who was in denial. But, when Joshua was born six weeks ago and my husband and I accepted his diagnosis, celebrated his birth, resumed a happy family life and didn't fall to pieces, a lot of people accused US of being in denial. I guess you're expected to MOURN and GRIEVE your child's birth if he isn't "perfect".

Well, I like that one, because I think it looks a lot like my son. I wouldn't want to buy it, though, because I'm lucky enough to have the REAL THING! ;D

If we could find one that was smiling, my 7-year-old daughter would like one. She has a doll with a missing arm and she kept it that way so that it would look like her friend's father. She isn't macabre or anything . . . just very accepting of peoples' differences. She cut another doll's hair so it looked just like her friend's (to her, anyway!) I can't imagine that Joshua will ever want one of those dolls, though!

Ya know, I was looking at some other dolls that are supposed to resemble children with DS. What's wrong with depicting them with a smile, like most dolls??? These kids smile just as much as other children (or maybe more). I agree . . . this one looks a little creepy.

Maybe these printing readiness sheets would work: penmanship.donnayoung.org/redines.htmHere's a site where you can download readers. There are some samples for free. If you want access to the whole program, it's 29.95 for six months. It's a good program. I subscribed for a year and that was more than enough time to print out all of the books and related worksheets. You probably would be most interested in the alphabet books, the decodable books, and the sound/symbol books. The books are in black and white, but you can download a colored cover. www.readinga-z.com/Finally, I'll bet you can find some things to use at www.learningpage.com . You have to register, but it is free. You want the theme sheets, and click on Funsheets. (The site is easier to navigate if you register and sign in FIRST.) Probably some of the preschool or kindergarten ones would work. Feel free to email if I can help. I love teaching my children, and love helping others do the same. Bob Jones University has adapted their preschool curriculum to children with Down syndrome. It's the only one I know of that is specific to Down syndrome. I haven't seen the program yet, so I can't offer an opinion about it. There are a lot more curriculum suppliers, but I'm not sure what shipping to NZ would be, which is why I offered printable resources here.

I home school all of our children . . . have from the start . . . taught 'em all to read. You can order some free stuff (workbooks with little, brightly-colored mini-books to cut out in the back) from the following link, plus there are fun activities online. www.starfall.comIf you have some specific kind of book in mind, let me know. (Colored or black-and-white? Phonics or sight-reading? Readers or workbooks?) There are a whole bunch of sources for learn-to-read material.

Thanks, everyone. You've given me a lot of places to start looking. I didn't have a clue where to begin.

It's a preferred provider coverage. It pays 100% of services from their preferred providers (local doctors . . . no cardiologists). It only pays 60% for out-of-area services.

The cardiologist examined Joshua again yesterday and he said to plan on having his VSD repaired in four or five months. Our health insurance (preferred provider organization) will only pay 60% of the expense. That leaves a lot for us, especially with what we just paid off for his birth, etc.
Our income is too high to qualify for Medicaid. Our state eliminated its medically needy program a little over a year ago. Is there anywhere else I can look for assistance in paying our medical bills?

Okay, I just can NOT get my pictures to show up in the post itself. Can someone pretend they are trying to quote my post above, so you can see how I inserted the URL? It just doesn't show up. Can anyone see what I'm doing wrong? Meanwhile, here's a link to the pics: share.shutterfly.com/osi.jsp?i=EeANGTRkybuWrLhA
