To make a long story short, our son had his tonsils and adnoids taken out yesterday. Since he's had a few "flat" hearing tests and HATES having his ears looked at the ENT Doc said he'd take a look in his ears. He ended up with tubes in his ears yesterday. I didn't really think much about tubes beforehand since JT had never had any ear infections, and all seemed well.
Now that we have these tubes and summer swim season is rolling around, it's time to think about plugs.
What kind of ear plugs have you had success with? Have any of you tried one of those swimming head band type of things? I have a feeling it's going to be a battle with the little guy to leave anything in his ears or on his head.
Maybe not once he realizes no ear plugs = no swimming. Wishful thinking?!

My 7 year old had 2 sets of tubes and now Alethea has her 1st set. We had fitted plugs made at the doctors office for Micah and used the headband as an extra precaution. The fitted plugs work quite well without the band. I've never had any issues.
Alethea just got her set of plugs and she hasn't even messed with them once in her ears.
The cost around here anyway is approx. $50, but well worth it.
They simply make a mold of the ear and then make these silicone like plugs from the mold, it takes all of 5 minutes for the molds and 10 days to get the plugs.
Not bad and well worth the $50.

Funny - our ENT said we don't need ear plugs for MM. Of course she doesn't submerge her head but does move around alot and has the possibility of getting water in her ears but he said because her ear canals are so narrow not to worry about it? laurie

I always like to play it safe. What happens if they accidentally go all the way under water? I am a bit neurotic...
Our ENT did say Alethea's canals were not as bad as some DS children he has seen. So maybe it is an individual doctor's preference...

Laurie, I would ABSOLUTELY be using plugs no matter what he says. BECAUSE her eustachian tubes are smaller, water is more likely to go in and not come back out. Perfect breeding ground for bacteria. Better safe than sorry.

We use both the plugs, and the ear bands to hold them in. In our area, we can buy the plugs in a fluorescent orange, so I know right away if those things fall out! This is a link for the Ear Band-It! store.yahoo.com/earplugstore/earbanearret.htmlLaurie, I have never heard of a doctor being unconcerned about a child with DS getting water in their ears because of small canals. Eeek! Just the thought freaks me out, LOL!

I can't believe I spent $20 for that headband in my doctor's office! I didn't even think to look elsewhere. Oh well, I guess I paid for the convenience of it! LOL

Our ENT stongly Suggests (Mandates) that Katie is not allowed in the awater with out ear molds.
His office makes the "molds" to fit too. We use the ear band to make sure they stay in. I will say tho, I wish they were Florescent Orange or something. Last year Katie lost one at the beach... GONE FOREVER.
Luckily we had another one made. Ours ran about $16.00 per mold, Like I said, we use the band too.. just hate to lose those little things.
Hugs,
Cathy

Samantha has yet to have an ear infection (thank God), but do I need to use ear plugs. She loves the water and we usually go swimming every day?

I have a question about this headband. I had never seen anything like this until this thread. With plugs in the ear and the headband on, are the kids able to go underwater? Jennifer loves to swim and we go practically every day. She has been watching all the kids jumping in and going under and wants to do this SO bad. I have been letting her jump to me but not letting her go under. I have not been putting plugs in her ears because she just flicks them out, so I just keep her above water. Well, yesterday she got the opportunity while in the baby pool. She jumped up and let herself go totally under before I could stop her. This was her first experience under water and it didn't phase her at all!!! I was standing right beside her and pulled her up. She looked stunned for a minute, but I could tell by her face she would try it again if given the chance. That little DAREDEVIL!!!! I suppose I need to invest in plugs and a headband if this works to keep the water out. DH now wants me to take her in to the ENT just to be sure the tubes are fine. This is our first year with tubes and I am kinda upset she can't go under because I believe she is ready to try to learn to swim.. Anyone have any feedback on these bands?? I would really appreciate it

Deborah,
With the plugs and the headband they can go under water. The band helps to keep the plugs from falling out, the plugs (espcially the fitted ones) help to keep the water out.

We've been doing some experimenting with ear plugs.....and have finally found something that is working.
They are "Doc's Proplug" which aren't molded exactly to fit the ear, but SOOO much better than the balls of wax. They come in different sizes. Our little guy is an xs. Because it's not molded exactly, we use the ear 'band-it" too.
