CC, Yes, I watched the one with Jenny McCarthy, Jim Carey, and their Doctor. I agree with them on some things, like the spacing of the vaccines and holding off until the immune system is more mature (like the Hepatitis B shot...why give it at 2 days old unless you are at risk). Makes alot of sense to me. I bought her newest book"Healing and preventing Autism" authored by Jenny and Dr. Jerry Kartzinel, the doc who was on the program with her. I think his son is about pre-teen years and has autism. Its a very interesting book. Alot of stuff on diet, supplements, environmental toxins, etc. I know Eric has alot of dietary issues....right now we are having horrible stomach cramps and I'm trying to figure out what is causing them. We've been back and forth to Cleveland Clinic these past 4 weeks....Can't figure it out. This week I have the lovely task of collecting stool samples for 3 days for analysis. They want to see if he absorbs any fat from the foods he is eating. He hasn't gained any weight in over a year, and he dropped on the growth charts. I'm really concerned because he seems so fraile. He's always had "gut" issues, with the Hirschsprungs and food allergies. He didn't test positive for Celiac, but I'm going to keep a food diary to see if I can figure this out. Sometimes I think alot of these physical problems Eric experiences may be the cause of alot of his "autistic...PDD" behaviors. I had one lady pediatrician/neurologist/psychiatrist tell me the gut is our second "brain". What we eat most definetly affects our behaviors. Think of someone who is drunk...the alcohol affects the behavior...same for caffeine, sugars, food dyes and additives. Its something for me to think about. The other Doctor on Larry King that was the rebuttal person for Jenny was Dr. Max Witznitzer. He is the neurologist who specializes in autism at Rainbow Baby and Childrens Hospital in Cleveland. Eric saw him last year. He's the one who didn't think Eric was autistic. Felt he was "too social..too much eye contact"...He is a excellant doctor, and maybe he's right on with his diagnosis. Dr. Capone thinks he is PDD and wants to try meds. I'm not sure what to do....Very CONFUSED! But I got to give Jenny McCarthy alot of credit....she is doing all she can to help her child. And for her, it seems to be working. Not all children respond the same, so I guess we all need to get all the information we can, (from both "sides") and see what helps our child. They certainly are correct when they call this a "puzzle"....

Didn't see it but here is my two cents... There is lots to be said about the relationship between food allergies and autism.... and I think if a child has something like that and autism and you figure out the allergies and combat it that way, it does help the Autism.........hence, curing it in a sense.... But not ALL Autism DX's are derived from allergies or "easy fixes"...... so I don't think all cases of Autism can be "cured".... which in return bugs me LOL........... Maybe I am way off base but I am speaking on personal experience and opinion A.

A., I totally agree with you... I wish it were that simple. The one thing that really bugs me is that alot of docs we see kind of have the attitude of well, what does it matter if you help the autism...he still has Down Syndrome! Duh! They don't quite get it.... Its like why bother? He still isn't normal. Really upsets me.

I used to be totally against the school of thought about vaccines and allergies and such "causing" autism. But last month I went to a conference about childhood developmental disorders and it was explained to me in a way that made sense. Basically, there ARE several different kids of autism, some of them caused by allergens, foods we eat, environmental toxins, etc. The psychiatrist who did this conference said he feels that in the near future the DSM will start classifying Autism into different kinds. It made more sense to me. I think Autism is just still something we know very little about! I think we will find many new ways of treating it and helping our kiddos out, just like we do with DS, PDD, etc. etc!
