All things considered it was a pretty painless meeting.....
Had to rear the ugly MamaBear growl over issues with summer services but I did end up getting what I thought Alison needed. They were trying to do "related services only" - OT, PT, ST - but I felt very strongly that she needed to be in a full academic setting so that she wouldn't lose the skills she learned this year as well as that she would be sooo very lost with out the whole school routine all summer. In the end it was agreed that she would get full services through a BOCES program instead of what the school district was offering this summer ( little more than an all day recess! ) that will continue to build and reinforce the academic skills she has developed this year. She's done really well with learning to read and some very, very basic math. It makes me so very happy and proud of her when we sit and read a book together - she tries so very hard to sound out words she's not familiar with and is sooo very excited when she gets them right.
She'll continue in a full integration setting in first grade but will be getting some extra support from resource room as a push-in. I really struggled with whether staying in this type of setting was truely best for Alison or if a more self-contained setting would be the best place for her to learn as much as she can. I tell ya, I really could have used a magic ball to see into the future, KWIM???
So, all in all, things went well..... which I'm sure was helped along by me following the sage advice of Connie!!!! Bring baked goods and coffee!!! Made a yummy cranberry coffee cake and arrived armed with that and a nice hot, fresh box of Tim Horton's coffee!!!! Boy, did their eyes light up!!!
I know I haven't been posting much lately but I do read most everyday, and think of you guys often!!!
