Technically we have one more year of elementary school (5th grade) come Fall, but I wanted Russell's current teacher and I to meet with the Middle School and see the program so we can know what to plan for and what to expect. We really liked it. They have two classes set up. One class is more academic and one class is more of a functional skills class. The functional skills class would be where Russell would be for most if not all his days and I liked it... they set it up like an apartment! So they had a bed, kitchen, living area, etc... so the kids learned their functional skills! We talked to her about what was expected of the kids and planning our next year so Russell could meld with the others best. Middle School is BUSY and LOUD..... so we need to work on some "getting use to noise and crowds" kinda stuff this next year. Also, we still need to work on more appropriate social skills which are VERY lacking. My boy is DINKY compared to these kids... I know we have another year but man.... there were other kids w/DS there and they were still MUCH bigger and taller then Russell!!!! He is just too small for Middle School!!!! One thing that made me feel good is that the teacher we met with (whom I really liked!) complimented me on meeting this early... she said most parents don't do this and she feels more parents should. Made me day to know my nuerotic planning was welcomed! LOL A.

No Jessie, it was just us checking it all out to make sure it was going to be appropriate and what to expect... as we get closer (we still have one more year) we will do more visits as well as they will come to Russell's IEP. They also mentioned coming to the currrent school and observe

Oh A - I totally get the small thing. Since we did not go the usual route and Ryan already started MS, he is by far the smallest child in the room. That led me to be concerned about babying, but the kids are great. I know Ryan and Russell are close in age... isn't it just strange to have them leaving elementary school? It is great that you are establishing a good relationship with the teacher early on. Our new teacher is probably the best one we have ever had since Ryan started attending school. She is just so darn good that I am always pinching myself Jodi
