ok...trying again to see if anyone else is going from here. I am also trying to decide about registering or not for the workshops. I think the NDSC needs to have another track for parents like me who are sort of nearer the end of this journey and have our kids settled into their more permanent lives. I no longer am searching for answers for everything Emily does or every single one of her behaviors. I am getting weary of advocacy and all the other soap box activities I once led and participated in. I really like just networking with other parents who are where we are in life now, hearing about their kids and their lives. I get ancy sitting in long workshop sessions.
I think a track for parents like me to just sit and visit with maybe a facilitator would be good. I no long want to participate in "one up manship" workshops...just want to share stories, woes, and funnies with people who would understand. I feel like my child fits into this old world pretty well...and SURE ...things could be better and we could all try harder to push for more and keep the ball rolling faster...but....LOL.
Anyhow just wondering who I might get to meet this trip so Marnie and I can decide how we might spend our time if WE dont attend that much.

Have fun Jackie!
I guess you may have figured out that I don't want to go. One is enough for me. Besides, I have been through that and I am not a parent!

Debbie...speak up at the meeting Saturday and make sure they try and send someone to the conf. I didn't ask because I have not been active, but we really should be sending someone every year.

Jackie ~ Just asking and hope its OK I do that You seem kind of negative about the convention, so why do you go then? I have never been and have heard mixed things over the years about them, so I am truly wondering if you have "out grown" them so called, why go? Maybe you can start a workshop for Mom's that just want to chat... Just a thought We will not be going and at this rate since Chris is 16 I am doubting we will ever go CC~

Oh please do not mis understand me CC. These conferences are Wonderful!!!! I am only speaking of myself in terms of not being able to sit thru long workshops and focus the way I used to. I personally think EVERYONE here should attend at least once . You meet so many neat people and the presenters are usually excellent.
The NDSC has a policy that anyone attending must register. That is how they can afford to put on these huge undertakings. Of course there are always some who dont...and often I see those people sneaking into the workshops and it really bums me out.
My thoughts are that now that Em is grown and our situation is pretty much set...and we are not seeking new and innovative things for her anylonger, that many of these workshops now ...good as they are...are lost on me because I am no longer in a situation where I can come back and share the info with those who really need it. All of you on this board would profit from going. And YES there are some workshops that WOULD benefit Emily. However we are happy with where we are at the moment and not ready to chase another rainbow in terms of seeking the most perfect situations. I did this for years and years and I do NOT regret one single moment of it. It has earned me the right to sit back now for a bit and let others continue marching. And largely due to info I gleaned from the NDSC meetings and people I met there Emily has had a great life.
CC Chris is only 16...you have years and years to go and learn...I think you should.
I am going because the Youth and Adult meetings are something that Emily really looks foreward to. There are all levels of kids in these meetings and it seems to work well for all of them. I think Chris would love this.

Sorry to add in to this thread so late, I haven't been able to access unomas from a computer for weeks! I'm going to the conference. I've already received confirmation of my registration. I was born and raised in Sacramento and I can stay with my parents and leave the kids with grandma! If you want to know what to do, there's plenty. Close by is "Old Sacramento" known for its interesting stores. It is the historic portion of Sacramento restored as a tourist destination. There are some unique stores that sell everything from old fashioned candies, clothing, jewelry, toys, etc. There is a large railroad museum in Old Sac, or you can take a riverboat dinner cruise. The discovery children's museum, which focuses on the goldrush era, is also next to the railroad museum. There is a water park and zoo in town, but they are not within walking distance of the convention center. Kristin
