We are in the middle of Sam's yearly check-up and I swear everything is wrong this year.
He has only grown 3 inches the last 3 years and is in the 5th percentile (on Ds charts) so lots of blood work later...... his thyroid levels are way high and had positive antibodies for celiacs.
Had his hearing checked and he's not hearing hardly at all out of his left ear but there is definite fluid in them so we have an appointment with the ENT to talk about putting tubes in.
This wouldn't be so bad if we didn't have to drive all over the countryside to see the specialist, its been a 45 minute drive followed by an hour and a half constantly over the last month.....will be glad when we are settled for the year.
I keep hoping that the biopsy for celiacs will be negative but I'm not holding my breath I have a very strong family history of it, so I will be being tested as well.
That's the update on the Sam front, Jess

I feel for you...(hugs). It was a two hour drive each way for the gastroenterologists check-up today. Several of us on unomas, including my household, cook gluten-free so there is additional support if you need it.
Within about a month of the gluten-free diet the weight gain improved, height/growth improved, respiratory problems improved, and she is having PE tubes less replaced less frequently. Much improved.
Hang in there...as the problems get solved, the trips to the specialists will diminish!
By the way, everyone, have you seen that Betty Crocker has put out cake, brownie, and cookie mixes that are gluten free? They have a couple of employees in their kitchens who need to be on gluten-free diets! Finally, a mainstream company that is creating gluten-free versions I can purchase in my regular grocery store!

I'm very lucky with the gluten free stuff that I have two cousins who have it, nothing like family who gets it lol. Just wish we lived in a bigger town right about now.

Yep, BTDT. Well, except Charlie's hearing tested out fine after we finally got a BAER done. And he's grown and gained nicely after going gluten free about 20 months ago. And we pretty much get to do one stop shopping for doctors at CHOP, not a lot of running around. Feel for you on that. And, guess what, Lynn was just talking to Disney Dining about gluten free options for the character breakfast at the Crystal Palace. She was making a reservation for early August, like 3 days before her birthday. Guess we are going to stop off and see the dirty rat, er, mouse, again this year. Jeez. Gluten free ain't nearly as bad as terribly hen pecked. -- Bob

We've also BTDT. Both daughters and I are gluten free now. After Cassie was diagnosed with Celiac, I decided that other daughter and I probably had it also, it just isn't diagnosed very often around here. Both girls are growing a lot more now! Cassie's thyroid meds were reduced also, after starting the GF diet. I can't wait to find those GF Betty Crocker mixes! Oh, and she just got her 4th set of ear tubes on July 3rd.
Good luck! Donnita
