Every year at this time, my son's cheeks would become very chapped. I know because we take a lot of pictures this time of year. Now that he is older, it has stopped. But, it seemed everyone I knew with a young child with Ds had the same problem. No matter what I tried, I always had to wait for it to heal on it's own.
Anybody else have the same experience?
Anybody had success in clearing it up?

MB,
We are going thru this right now...Eric's little cheeks are red and dry looking. I have been using A & D ointment and making sure I dry his face really good after washing. So far, its looking a little better, but not completely gone. Dolly

Same here, the colder it gets, the more chapped Alison's cheeks get! I've had some success with Eucerin cream (not the ointment). Just started using it 3 days ago, but I can already see a big difference. I've been putting it on several times a day, just after washing her face while it is still a little damp and really slather the stuff on before going outdoors. Our ped also recommended using soap only as needed, to just use warm (not too warm though) water to wash her face with.

Aquafor works really well. I usually put it on at night before bed & by morning it is pretty much gone.

With Emily ...our problem was not the cheeks...but her durned upper lip. From the time she was three until even... sometimes... up to the present...one side of her upper lip will split wide open.
Let me tell you...we have tried every single product on the market to no avail. Ed being an endocrinologist with diabetic pts who have terrible dry skin...brought home every single sample around. We consuted our dermatologist numerous times and even went so far as to have the fissure created by repeated infections sewn back together by a plastic surgeon.....only to have it then split open on the other side!!!!
Our climate here in the Texas Panhandle is extrememly dry...desert climate really and very cold in winter. I am hoping that the humidity of Houston is going to be much easier on her lips and will be able to check it out in person when we go there soon. Good Luck....and may the season of chap pass quickly for all of you...LOL

Vaseline Petroleum Jelly. If I would be taking my son out and it was extremely cold, I would put a light layer on his cheeks as a barrier from all that saliva due to TEETHING! UGH! Guess I'm going to start all this all over again!

Eucerine by Aquaphor. I have the tub on the dressing table and they both get a "facial" every night. Carter has never had red cheeks since I started it over a year ago and I do it every night. We sing the "facial" song and he thinks it's the bee's knees. It's a little on the expensive side, but I have had the tub for two years and it isn't even half gone. Great for bum rash, too.

Walmart will have it with creams and lotions.. they should. If not, ask the pharmacist. I know they carry the Aquaphor with the lotions but the Bag Balm you have to get in the pet section LOL... sometimes they carry it in the lotions but usually not.

I just started using Eucerin with Yosh and its aworking great. Its kept his lips from cracking, too. My only problem is how much Yosh fights every time I put it on. He's really getting too strong for me.

I just wanted to mention that the Eucrine Cream (which is quite expensive) is also available in generic form; esp. at the big chains. I about bankrupted myself buying over the counter creams for Gabe . He still has a lot of dryness on the upper lips too and under the nose and triple antibiotic cream works very well in healing that up.

Thanks for all the replies. How great for others to have this information this time of the year. Wish I had known this a few years ago.
