I am posting this for a friend with no access to internet. Her child, a boy about 12 years old, has only once in his life "made" stools normally. They always have to give him an enema after 4 or 5 days. And now he is getting bigger, and it is beginning to be a real fight. They have done GI checkups but nothing specific was found. Any ideas?

Rickismom,
Did they ever check him for Hirschsprung's Disease? This will cause chronic constipation. The gastro docs would usually order a biopsy of the bowel to see if he has the nerve cells needed to "push" the stool down and out. (Eric had this). I would think that at his age they would have checked already for that, but maybe they didn't. Does this young man have down syndrome? Let us know how he makes out. Dolly

Dolly...I don't think many physicians aggressively check for this in DS....not sure why except a biopsy is really the best way and not many want to go through that. I think also now there is some sort of non invasive test they can do.
As I have posted here before....you and I both got an actual diagnosis in our kids...Emily's at 3 days of age! I still suspect many more kids have it....you CAN live with it although later in life risk either totally sagged out bowels or rips.....but so many have constipation I wonder if maybe colons of kids with DS have fewer than normal of the nerve cells that relax the bowels....but maybe its an all or none thing...dont know.

My son Benjamin 16 months with Ds has a problem with constipation ever since he was born and he goes to a GI specialist every 6 months and at his last visit i was told he has low muscle tone in his rectum and will most likely need to be on lactulose for his entire life to help him go to the bathroom. He recently had tubes ut in and didn't give him his morning dose of medicine and that night was crying with a belly ache from not going to the bathroom. Charissa
