Good morning! We have a challange here. Damara has "failed" her hearing test at school. No big surprise to me, I know she just wouldn't/ couldn't do it the way the administer it. So anyway, we took her to a new ENT, they had to refer us out. We went to this new Audiologist and Damara would NOT cooperate and therefore, we could not get her tested. So she suggested a test that they will sedate her and do the whole sound wave thing..Sorry, I have forgotten the name of the test...I was wondering have any of you dealt with this difficulty of testing for hearing and what seemed to be best. I hate to sedate her if we don't have to...but she is just not cooperating...GRRR..please let me know..we are calling the ENT back tomorrow and thought if we had some ideas that would be great! Thanks everyone!

Thats an ABR test, and it's a definative hearing test. Well worth it, as it eliminates all questions about hearing loss! The sedation is minimal. Just enough for a nice little nap, but less than the anesthesia they get for tubes. (although sometimes they'll do this test while a child is asleep for tube surgery.)
Angela has a progressive hearing loss. She had LOTS of ABR's done as an infant/toddler. She learned earlier than most to cooperate with a regular test. (and we know they were accurate, becuase they were consistant with the ABR results.) but she has lost quite a bit of hearing over the years. She started out with a borderline/mild hearing loss, then went to a mild/moderate, and is now in the completely moderate range. We expect that she'll continue to loose hearing.

We had troubles getting a good test with Chris when he was a little guy. He refused to wear the head phones they wanted to test him with. So what I did was pick up head phones that plugged into the TV and he got a real kick out of that so when we went back he was fine wearing the head phones for the hearing test. What also helped was having a helper in the booth with him making the test like a game.
Christopher has a mild hearing loss due to a bone thing. Christopher has been tested yearly and is always the same a mild hearing loss.
Best of Luck with the test.

Thank you ladies! I guess we will go with the ABR test for now, but I like the idea of headphones to "play" with so she is use to them. She too has gone from normal, to mild to low moderate the last time we could test her about 1 year ago...better to know than not! I appreciate your help!

Courtney just had her hearing test done. Her right ear is about the same normal to mild but her left ear has gotten worse at mild to moderate. She has to go back in 2-3 months and have another test. If the results are the same they are talking about a hearing aid for her. What they do with her is make it into a game. If she hears a tone she drops a toy into the bucket ect. She does great!
