The ARC and Special Olympics jumped on this too. So, once again the White House issued a personal apology to Tim Shriver. That's just swell. Not. -- Bob

Pathetic. When comments like this flow easily from an educated person's mouth..........it's no wonder that we are still hearing it from teenagers and kids at the schools our children attend. Very sad.

Yes...why is everyone always apologizing to Tim Shriver...like that makes every use of the R word ...."OK now". IMHO if I was ever going to use the R word...Rahm Emanuel would be a great target.

It makes me wonder if anyone out there in the public will ever "get it." I don't think so. Will anyone like Mr. Emanuel become enlighted? He is really an ignoramus person. I'm sorry, but, that is the truth.

I want to apologize for my post. I abhor the man but the way I put it was as bad as using the R word myself! I am also surprised that with all the quick responses from the various entities like ARC, SO...NDSC...etc that there was almost no media response. Sort of a case of 'been there...done that already' on their part IMHO. We will have to keep on fighting ....I think its great that so many of us keep reminding people on Facebook.

Oh great. Now Rahm has Sarah on his case. news.yahoo.com/s/ynews/ynews_pl1101Maybe we could set up a round of boxing with Rahm and Bill O'Reilly, followed by the real audience grabber, a match of mud wrestling with Sarah and Michelle. Rahm should watch his mouth, but we all knew that. And, yes, he should issue a public apology. But maybe he should get in line behind, ... Let's see, where should we start, George the First, err, George H.W. Bush and his crack about the "extra chromosome set." Followed immediately by Al Gore, could apologize for referring to the "extra chromosome right wing" and apologize to Bush for stealing his slur. Maybe they both could then publicly apologize for all the stupid things said by them when vice president and all the stupid things said by all vice presidents. Maybe if Sarah had become vice president, and her chances are looking slimmer each day, she too could say something stupid, or maybe something else stupid. Am sure SNL would be glad to help her out, not to mention Katie Couric. I say, a pox on all their houses. Sling as much mud as you like on each other. But leave my kid out of it. YOU WORTHLESS &*+%$# ^@ $#!+ JMHO, Bob

I agree with you on that Bob. It seems everyone wants to have their limelight on Mr. Emanuel unfortunate remarks. I hate it when someone makes fun of others. The remark he made was derogatory. I don't like when people do that. It did offend me to be honest. You know what, I am not surprised. He seems to be rather a brash person from what I have read. I wonder what they all say behind closed doors? I don't think I want to know!

So, Jackie, did you say Rahm Emanuel is retarded for using the word "retarded?" Or am I twisting that a little too much? Anywho, Mr. Emanuel is meeting this afternoon at the White House with Mr. Shriver, and others I believe. firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2010/02/03/2193058.aspxMabye Tim Shriver will get Rahm Emanuel to sign up for the R-word campaign. I think lots of folks from Uno Land are already fans of www.facebook.com/EndtheWord?ref=mfand have taken the pledge at www.r-word.org/And maybe have watched John C. McGinley at www.youtube.com/watch?v=PE_5_BbZlbIMy comment in taking the pledge was that I don't really have a problem with the term mentally retarded when used correctly and respectfully by health care and education professionals. But I do think it a good thing that AAMR, the American Association on Mental Retardation, changed its name to AAIDD, American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. From www.aamr.org/content_104.cfm"Mental retardation and intellectual disability are two names for the same thing. But intellectual disability is gaining currency as the preferred term. In fact, the American Association on Mental Retardation changed its name in 2007 to the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. It is crucial that ‘mental retardation’ and ‘intellectual disability’ should be precisely synonymous in definition and in all related classification because current federal and state laws contain the term ‘mental retardation’. That is the term used in law and public policy to determine eligibility for state and federal programs, including the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act—IDEA (2004), Social Security Disability Insurance, and Medicaid Home and Community Based Waiver. Also, the term ‘mental retardation’ is used for citizenship and legal status, civil and criminal justice, early care and education, training and employment, income support, health care, and housing and zoning." I think intellectual disability and developmentally disabled not only sound better but are more accurate. Retarded means slow. And sometimes that is the case, just a bit slower than usual. But sometimes it's not a question of taking longer to get there, it's a matter of not having a particular ability, will never get there. When I was growing up, which was many, many years ago and in the deep South, I heard the n-word (ProBoards software now changes n.i.g.g.e.r to 'black person') used a lot. And sometimes I heard it used quite appropriately and forcefully by one black person speaking of another black person. But times, and language, change. And sometimes for the better. I think today anyone who uses the n-word immediately identifies him or herself as ignorant and hateful. I think it would be a good thing if, after March 3, the same could be said of anyone who uses "retarded," or worse "retard," as a slur, epithet, insult, put down. So, getting rid of those uses of those words would be a very good thing. But what we really need to do is change the way lots of people see, and think about, people with various differences. Whew, sorry so long, and, as per usual, JMHO, Bob

and...did you or anyone here hear Bernie Goldberg just a few moments ago comment on the 'meeting at the White House' over this issue.
He stated it was ridiculous...that there is NOTHING wrong with the word RETARDED and that we are ALL too 'politically correctness' sensitive about it. He further went on to say its ridiculous that Little People don't like the term 'midget' and consider it derrogatory just like the 'N" word. He then looked straight at the camera and said..."MIDGET MIDGET MIDGET' and grinned....I am sure the text of his interview will be somewhere online.
