Do any of you have problems w/ your kids having major hangnails? I thought I read somewhere that this is common in our kids due to nail bed issues? I can't remember where I read that. I always have Brooker put lotion on her hands but these pesky hangnails keep happening. Any thoughts?

Kathleen has some major hangnails! She also "picks" at them terribly. I have to threaten her with band-aids(she hates band-aids).She has picked her thumb to the point of bleeding so many times.I try my best to keep her nails trimmed but she still is a professional picker. Mary G.

I think it's the dry skin. I'd try more lotions - go for the ones specifically for cuticle softening and be consistent about using it and rubbing it well into the nail beds. When I'm getting hangnails, it's usually because of dry skin & the super-moisturizing lotions do the trick for me - over time.
Funny, Stevie's skin has been softening up lately. All the winter keratosis pilaris (chicken skin) is gone from both legs and arms. And her nails grow like crazy - I have to clip them every couple of weeks & they'd make any hand model proud when I finally get around to clipping, they're so long. But we haven't had the hangnails yet.

Ethan used to be prone to these too, and I have to tell ya, when Aidan was a baby I bought that Lansinoh lanolin product for breastfeeding - and one night I used it on Ethan's cuticles. I swear I saw a difference overnight! I use it on him all winter now, although I have to put it on him after he's asleep because he'll wipe it off. It's kind of pricey, but a tube of it lasts forever!
