I probably should put this in the education/iep section but here goes anyway: My local school district is attempting to merge midly cognitively impaired students K-4 with another district in our county. My son is in third grade and would have to move for one year, because the other half of the plan would send the MICI kids from the other district 5-8 grades to our district. I am opposed to this on so many levels I can't even begin to explain, but I am attaching a local newspaper article about the proposal. Any one who would like to show their support of this is welcome to add to the comments section of the paper or give me a "fight on " here at on Uno Mas because this has been such a hard thing for me to do as a somewhat private behind the scenes type of person. www.tecumsehherald.com/node/3631

Well, then maybe the mildly cognitively impaired kids need to just be INCLUDED with their gen ed peers instead of segragating and bussing elsewhere.....they are going backwards!

Actually, that's part of the problem. These kids are included- mine spends about 70% of the day in gen. ed. They seem to think our kids can get by with the resource room, and my son could for the pure academics, but he needs the CI room for his social/emotional stuff. General ed is at times overwhelming. Everything moves at a really fast pace. He gets some of his academics in the CI room with several other CI kids and where they all feel more confident and able to talk and be themselves. Ultimately the district wants to get rid of a classroom and teacher, not looking ahead to say hey, right now the kids in there are really independent( due in large part to work in the CI room), and there aren't any younger kids on the list right now to join. Who knows what kids are in the preschool programs, or even unidentified incoming kindergarteners are waiting in the wings? Kids need to stay at their home school, where their siblings are students as much as humanly possible. My son will be fine either way, I will make sure of that. I am fighting for the right to have a CI endorsed teacher in the k-4 part of our district so families don't have to split their kids among two totally different districts every 4 years!
