Medicare Physician Pay Cut Imminent
The health of seniors lies in the balance.
Unless Congress acts immediately, doctors will start receiving a
21% lower payment from Medicare by the end of this week.
This pay cut would undoubtedly force some doctors to stop seeing Medicare patients altogether. That is why it is imperative that you call or send an email to your Senators and Representatives immediately. Right now, a bi-partisan majority of Congress is willing to prevent a pay cut of 21%.
More than a decade ago, Congress set up a formula that governs how doctors are paid by the Medicare program. The intent was to slow the growth of Medicare costs, but the result was a formula that has proposed cutting payments for America’s doctors year after year after year. Since 2003, Congress has consistently acted to prevent these pay cuts from going into effect. These votes were largely bipartisan, and they succeeded both when Democrats ran Congress and when Republicans ran Congress.
Obviously putting a band-aid on the problem year after year is not the best fix. The problem will be solved only when we move our healthcare system to one that focuses more on primary care. But, for right now, Congress must pass the “doctor payment fix” or seniors may well suffer.
