Hi. Our family is considering a move to California. Our son Evan is 22 yrs old.
I'm concerned about what services would be available to him. We currently live in Missouri. He works in a supported work environment. He is also on a waiting list to move into an ISL house. He is on SSI and is covered by Missouri Medicaid.
We keep hearing about what a mess the state government is in, massive budget cuts, etc. so I thought I'd ask you all what your experiences are if you live in that state.
Thanks for the help!

HI!!! There are certain communities that support and enable some great living for adults with dd. One of them is Culver City CA home of Sony Studios. If you can call westside regional center and start asking questions or go on their website they will assist you. They have awesome ppl in the community and are a great place to live for adults. not sure of the state its in now but cc has always taken care of their adults so beautifully and have many industries and corporations that assist when money is tight in the state. So check it out. (((HUGS)))) Steff
p.s. though it is much different price wise for you in the housing industry. Don't wanna scare you with the prices just check it out any assistance I amy give u lemme know

Hi I wish I could help you but can't . I just wanted to add that this is actually something important for me to know as well since I always hope and pray that we will be able to move back to so cal one day which is where all of my family lives. I miss them so much. I do hear negative things occasionally on here from parents about the terrible situation california is in but I find it hard to believe that such a great state in my opinion would not provide good services for our kids. My mothers friend is something important in the down syndrome community of los angeles and she tells my mom that there is no better place to be. I will call my mom and ask for her info and try to get a hold of her to see what she says. Do you have any idea where about you would be moving to? California is huge. Good luck! Jessika

We are in the San Gabriel Valley and are part of the San Gabriel Valley regional center. Most of our services are with the school district. Whenever we try to get additional services, rc is always saying funding has been cut. However, if you are resourceful, you can challenge this. Funding has been cut and a lot of services are not being funded and I really have been bummed about the lack of social services in my immediate area. We have to drive quite a bit to participate in different programs.
Best thing I can recommend is to check out which areas you are interested in. I know the orange county has a pretty good regional center and additional community support, but that is an expensive county.

Thanks for the help & support everyone! It seems like we might have 2 options. The first would be Fresno & second somewhere around Temecula, where my parents live. I'm a SoCal native so I'm not looking forward to the price of real estate! We are still in the decision making process so it will be a couple of months before we know anything. I just thought I'd get a jump on checking into services just in case. Thanks again for the help!

While I realize that it is out of the areas you are considering, I have a close friend who has a 28-year-old younger brother who has DS. She has been such a blessing to me and a great resource because not only is she a great friend, she is also a special ed teacher. They are in the San Fernando Valley and haven't moved because of the great services he is receiving. I don't know where he is going, but I could find out.
