I've just gots to ask about memory in our kids. It seems to me Brook has memorized everything. We get on the road we live and she starts yellin' "house" We get to the road to work and she hollers "office" We get on the road to school and she hollers "Brook and Marys school" (they go to the same school) We get almost to either grammas house or aunties house and she knows what is there. Goats and the two dogs at grammas and knows the names. Cats at aunties and the names. She knows the names of the bank girls and never makes a mess up. She knows what key to open the mail box on a key ring w. lots of keys. We have a Bi~mart here in town. Walmart (where gramma works is 30 minutes away) She knows when were at bi~mart. She goes right to the toys/books. When were getting close to walmart she starts in w/ "walmart. Gramma. Bikes. and goes straight to the bike section where gramma works. She remembers customers who come in to work and not just the ones who bring gifts LOL In the apartments here at work she knows who has candy basket w/ Brook writen on it, who has pretty hair bows every time we go there, and who brings books to her all the time etc. It's crazy what this kid remembers There is more but you get the jist Do any of you see this memory in our kiddos?

All the studies that have been done on our kids show that their visual memory skills are better than those of their typical peers. I know that is certainly true for Angela! It's also why our kids often do GREAT with things like early sight word programs, because it works off their visual memory skills!
Now that same research says their auditory memory (and I'll see if I can find it, I think it was done by Libby Kumin back in 2000 or so) isn't quite as good as their peers. But I have to say, with Angela we used her her auditory memory A LOT to pattern her learning for certain motor skills. For example, for cruising furniture we put bells on her shoes and moved her feet FOR her while chanting, "stomp, stomp, stomp, stomp, stomp, stomp" to a certain tune. That very same day she started repeating that same tune, and chanting the same chant on her own AND cruising the furniture all on her own...because she knew what to do. We did the same thing teaching her to climb up the stairs. We made up a song with "Hand, hand, foot foot" as the words, and up she went that very same day. (which scared the crap out of me, of course! LOL)
Yes, with Angela we found we could teach her just about anything if we put it to a song or an auditory pattern. Hmmmmm...maybe I need to think of a way to put her backstroke and her rhythmic breathing for her freestyle to a pattern!

YUP Christopher is the same. Colin and I basically suck at directions and once Chris has been somewhere he never forgets. We are always asking Chris K, where do we turn ;D The same with names of people takes me forever to remember ones name and Chris just once then he seems to never forget. Funny thing sometimes he goes up to people and calls them by name and is right and as far as we know has never met them before Kind of spooky how he does that. CC~

Sarah has a phenomenal visual memory. She knows where every place she has ever been in located. It doesn't matter if we go from a different direction, she still knows where we are. I always say she has a GPS in her head. She knew all her upper and lower case letters, numbers and shapes by the time she was 5. She has a very large repertoire of sight words. She just amazes me! I hate the IQ tests for the simple reason that they do not check the different ways our kids learn. They also do not take into account that some kids just refuse to point to pictures even if they know the answer. IDK, I believe Sarah's IQ score and her knowledge base is way out of kilter. I've been trying to prove how much she knows to her teachers for the past three years. Sarah also remembers every person she has ever met. We saw one of our former church members whom we hadn't seen in 3 years at the grocery store and Sarah knew exactly who she was. Actually, it took me a minute for my brain to register who she was and where I knew her. Sarah does not have that problem! Now, tell me why my bright, almost nine year old refuses to poop in the toilet. Chris

wow...she's a smart little cookie for her age! Yes our kids do have the capacity for great memory. For years our family has joked that Em can hear just one note of any piece of music and tell y ou the name and who is singing it...I notice others here have some of the same amazing stories. It's rewarding, isn't it.

This discussion about visual memory is so interesting to me! I have to say that there is something about the way my 5 1/2 month old Reina looks at me that makes me feel like she is REALLY looking at me (and quite frankly makes me feel very special). When any of us put our faces close enough to her she just loves to study our faces with both her eyes and her hands in such a special way. I don't remember feeling that way with my 2 year old.
I love hearing about all of your older kids. It seems that while there might be certain limitations, there are actually more advances in other areas.

Thx for sharing everyone I just find it quite interesting. One more thing for me to "prove" to the doctor community (Ed is excluded Jackie ) that our kids our super!! So very smart!! Oh Chris.... don't get me started on the way schools test our kids. Makes my blood boil sometimes. Like the day we went to the Ds clinic and they were testing Brook on what is this/that and using different names for an object ie: coat/jacket. Brook knows exactly what a coat is but they insisted on using the word jacket instead. I was so frustrated I kinda hollered at the ST about it. Finally i'd had enough of the "tricky" words they were insisting on using and we went to the next station. I love our kids
