Hello Everyone,
Reina had her 6-month check up yesterday and now weighs 12lbs and is 24.5 inches long. Yay! The back of her head has always been fairly flat. It is something that we have been monitoring, and have always focused on putting her on her side and tummy as much as possible. However, yesterday her pediatrician gave us a referral to get an evaluation for a cranial helmet. I am not worried or stressed about it, but do plan on doing a little research. Just wondering if any of you have any experience, advice, or input?

My daughter had one for about 6 months. It wasn't really a big deal. The initial plaster cast they made of her head was the most challenging part because you have to hold them completely still for 10 minutes or so, plus you also get covered with plaster goo. Wear old clothes when you have the appointment. About once a month we would go in to see the techs and they would measure her head and check the fitting and shave off parts of the inside of the helmet to fit her better as she grew and her head shape changed. God bless, Deane

Helmets weren't a "thing" until after Angela was too old for them. Man do I wish she had gotten the opportunity to have one!!!! Because Angela had a stroke, not only does she have the typical DS flat back of the head, but one side is flat too because she wouldn't turn her head one direction. Well, with hair this is completely unnoticeable, so who cares, right?
Well, the to vain side of this mama, it's kind of a pain, really. She cannot wear headbands, either the kind that go all the way around the head, (you need a rounded back of your head to keep them on, who knew!) nor the kind that just go over the top of the head (a flat side of your head causes one side of the headband to stick out and the other side to dig into your head...who knew?)
Just for the simple purpose of being a girlie girl, I wish she'd had a helmet. Silly, I know!
Ok, that said, my next door neighbors have twins who turned 1 this week. Their heads were quite misshapen! They wore helmets from 6-10 months and their heads are now perfect! They were really no big deal at all, and both mom and dad say they would do them again in a heartbeat. I've seen before/after pics of babies with DS who wore them, and the differences are pretty dramatic.

I first heard of helmets when my nephews son (non DS) who is 5 was born. Everyone thought his head was a funny shape...he was a big kid...but they decided NOT to helmet him and today I think he looks quite normal. My sister who is the grandmother was dismayed that they didnt but now admits she cant even tell. I never thought of doing this for DS.
