Okay, here is what might be a naive question. I have heard a lot of mention about sign language and Signing Times, is this something that all children with DS should and/or need to learn? Or I imagine that it depends on their speech abilities; therefore, perhaps I won't know if Reina needs it until she's a little older?

i think all children should learn it-they will pick it up before they can talk, it reduces frustrations, improves cognitive abilities. The signing time DVDs are awesome. I really attribute Kaelyn's speech abilities now on her learning signs first!!

Corinne: OMGoodness I can't say enough about Signing Time. You could probally go to the library and see if they have a dvd you can borrow. I didn't start signing time with Brook untill her 2nd birthday. Ask anyone here, I was stubborn LOL. I am soooooooo glad I got Brook into signing. I give Rachel {signing time} allllll the credit for everything Brook knows. By the time she was 2 1/2 she knew hundereds, yes hundreds of signs. She started school early b/c of her signing ability. Now at 4 1/2 she knows all her ABC's, 123's, colors, shapes, everything that is on the dvd's, she knows. She can even sign entire songs. She can even read sight words. I'll try to find the video and post it. It's cute. I can't say enough good things about signing time!!! Not only was it easy for Brooker to pick up the signs, it was easy for the Momma too I can't express enough how important signing is for our kids.

I love the video Jennifer, especially at the very end...she could become a Signing Times spokesperson! I went ahead and ordered from Best Buy, they are on backorder. You have all convinced me...guess I was an easy one.
In somewhat related news she had her hearing test a few weeks ago, something I had been worried about since she was born. They had tested the poor girl several times and could never get a clear answer on whether or not she had any hearing loss. They finally had to sedate her to make sure she was in a solid sleep. She passed! All of these months I had been wondering if when I was talking to her, if she could actually hear me.
I am looking forward to the videos, yet another language to learn in our home! Violet is learning Spanish with her grandma during the day (as will Reina), Reina will be learning sign language, now I've got to do some learning as well. I guess we're going to have a tri-lingual household!

I just saw that there is an 8-week Baby Signing Time class offered in my city for $97, but of course it is during the week. Sure wish I could stay home with the girls and didn't have to work.

Honestly, in my opinion the $97 would be better spent on Signing Time DVDs anyway, LOL. I took a few classes in sign language, but Logan only learned from the DVDs and he didn't care what else I tried to teach him. Actually, the classes I took went into more "language" when I was basically using nouns and verbs with Logan. Still . . . I wouldn't be too sad about not being able to take the classes. You'll learn TONS from the DVDs and you can always look up anything else you need on the Internet. By the way . . . I agree that sign language was very, very important for us. Even though Logan could say the phonics of each letter at the age of 3 (thanks for LeapFrog Letter Factory DVD) Logan didn't talk until he was 4. When I finally heard him say "Mom" it was an unbelievable moment. At the same time, however, he then assumed we could totally understand all of his "mumbo-jumbo" and dropped all of his signs. When we had his Case Conference for Kindergarten, the teachers came fully-expecting to take sign language classes over the summer . . . only to learn that he was now "speaking" and they just had to learn how to translate. ;D Today, he still uses 2 signs - "play" and "more." And with these, he uses them at the same time he says the word and basically uses them for emphasis (when he thinks we're ignoring his request). I can't imagine how difficult life would have been at our house without sign language. Sorry for the novel . . . Kim, Logan (Ds, 7) and Carson (5)

Kim is absolutely correct! Invest the money in Signing Time DVDs rather than paying for a class. Reina will learn so much from the DVDs in addition to signing. Honestly, they are the best investment ever!!!
