Looks like Em might get a new phone. We are both long overdue for upgrades. Her phone is so old it wont text and she is the prime texter on Katies Blackberry when they travel. We are on Sprint so need to use our upgrades there...does anyone have a suggestion for a texting phone from them? I am not a tech person and frankly I do NOT like texting...supreme waste of time for me and annoying. I had a texting phone for one month and then took it back...only thing I liked it for was texting Ed while he was in a meeting in Vegas about where to meet for lunch...LOL. But...Em has long wanted one. I just want a phone that will not be hard to use as a phone. The one I had was quite confusing...think it was the Sprint Remarq...it was hard to access numbers in my directory...easy to dial from scratch. I don't know why I worry cuz Em seems more tech savvy than me and uses her pc quite well.
Change is probably harder for me than for her...LOL. Current problem is that she has misplaced her charger cord and her flip phone is so old we cant find a replacement. I don't think she needs an EVO...but who knows.

How much do you want it to do? We're on Sprint also. Angela is *just* starting to text. (she only only sends back things like, "hi", etc.) She uses a Rumor. It has a slide out keyboard. It was my phone before my blackberry, and I liked it, but was ready for a smart phone. Angela is pretty quick to figure things out, how to get to stuff, etc. Much faster than Dean. LOL (not faster than me though. HA!)
I have an evo. It is very much like an iPhone. Angela is able to use it but only with A LOT of help, and it's super easy to hit the wrong buttons.

First of all...what a pretty girl Angela is!!!!! You must be very proud of her.
Emily does not use her cell phone to chat with friends really. Elvis here calls her occasionally and her friend Theresa, but am not aware of anyone in Austin who calls her to just chat other than her sister. But maybe they do. Her family does not have a land line so its the best way for us to stay in touch with her and of course she uses it when she travels. I see no need for the added expense of a smart phone and additional data charges for her because she has a computer and an iTouch. Of course she might feel otherwise...LOL. I will research the Rumor...I think she would do best with a keyboard rather than a touch screen. I am always all for anything that promotes communication...either verbal or written.
My cell is so old...it will get a text but to answer I have to shift everything from numbers to letters and its a big pain so I just tell people I have no texting capabilities. Of course once Em gets hers I will have to also...LOL.
But for the next six weeks it would solve everything if she could just find her charger!

This is the phone that Laura has: reviews.cnet.com/cell-phones/samsung-alias-2-sch/4505-6454_7-33647823.htmlIt is called an Alias 2. She loves it. It flips open like a regular phone for phone calls, and then flips open on the side for texting. It has some kind of keyboard that flips the numbers and letters. When opened as a phone, you see a regular phone number pad. When you flip it open sideways, it becomes a regular keyboard, a QWERTY keyboard, for texting. She got the hand of it very quickly, and loves it. Don't know if Sprint has something similar though, we use Verizon. Sharon

Jackie, I highly recommend a Blackberry for two reasons:
1) Em is familiar with the phone and will be able to use it quickly
2) I'm assuming Em doesn't have very big hands, and many phones with qwerty keyboards are wide, and may be difficult for her to handle. The blackberry is about 1/3 narrower than most slide-out keyboards, and so much easier to use for those of us with smaller hands.
You may have to pay for a data package, however, which is better than risking accidental overages.
Just my two cents ...
Cheers! Jenifer, mom to Joy Daisy

Jenifer...I have thought of that...Katie her sister has one (Katie likes it but her hubby told her she needs to move forward...LOL). Em does the texting for Katie when they drive on trips and around town...etc. She does well with it. I am going to visit her in a week for an art event and think we will go to the Sprint store to try out some phones. I need to shake my "leave well enough alone" attitude and just do this for her. She has stopped asking for one and she has used her flip phone for years with no problems...but I still need to encourage her to move to new levels even if she is 30. Texting would open her communications options even if it means I have to start doing it to so she has someone to text...LOL.

Angela is TINY. Her hands are the size of a 5 year old, but she is better able to text on her Rumor than she was on my blackberry. The buttons on the blackberry are too close together for her. They're perfect on the Rumor. Here's a picture of it.

ok...thanks for the info...I will be in Austin next week and we will look. I am feeling "old" compared to my friends who all have smart phones...LOL...but I really hate to spend the money on one just to regain MY youth. I will concentrate on Em.
