Kathleen's Dr. called me last night to talk about Kathleen's diagnosis. She tested as having the positive markers for Crohns disease. The MRI luckily did not show any ulcers. He did say that he thinks she has what's called perianal crohns disease which can be a little difficult to treat.(of course we don't do anything small...). I'm glad though that he's starting with a minimal treatment plan to see if it works. She started this morning taking an Azacol which is used to treat colitis and crohns). She takes 5 pills daily. This hopefully will help with the inflammation. It may take longer to work than a steriod but he didn't want to just put her on a steriod right away.( I totally agree with that). In 6 months he will do another colonoscopy. What a long road this ahs been I hope we're almost at the end... Mary Grace

Sorry that you and Kathleen have one more thing to deal with, but you two can handle it. Good wishes, Bob

Well, that is not the news I had been hoping for!! I totally agree about not starting off with steroids, and hope the other treatment works so well!! Praying for Kathleen!

It's been just over 2 weeks and there's no change. I'm still hoping and praying that this medication will kick in and the crohns will be in remission. This past week she also had a sinus infection so that made her feel even worse. She's now taking asprin. levothyroxine, 5 asacol, and 2 antibiotics everyday. What a lot to keep track of! I did find what looks like a good support group online and have had a chance to talk with a couple of adults with crohns. Mary Grace

Don't antibiotics trash the flora and fauna in the intestine? I never understand why doctors prescribe oral antibiotics to people with gut issues. I may be missing something here, but it sure seems counter-intuitive. If you're interested in a very different approach to Crohns, have a look at this: www.marksdailyapple.com/forum/thread8144.htmlThere are loads of articles on the recent research of the effects of a low-carb diet on Crohn's. Here's one: www.second-opinions.co.uk/crohns.htmlI'm just thinkin' that if the course you're taking isn't working, maybe it's time for a second opinion and finding a new direction.

Chris, I really hadn't thought about the antibiotic trashing the intestines. I'll have to check on that. The medication she's taking is apparently the first one lots of Dr.s try it may or may not work but it doesn't have as many side effects as some of the others. If this med doesn't work we will most likely have to try another med. It's not uncommon to have to try different meds to find what will work for an individual. I'll chekc out those links. I've been trying to find some things beyond meds that will help her feel better. Thanks! Mary Grace
