Hey everyone. I just wanted to tell you guys about Lauren. She turned 13 on 1/8. I can't believe it. I took her to a dentist who then sent me to a specialist. He is awesome...does a lot of work with individuals with Down Syndrome and cleft palates. Anyway, Lauren has a palate expander placed 3 weeks ago. She has a bad underbite. Now I know why she couldn't chew, only inhale her food. It has changed her teeth already and I aldready notice a speech improvement. I can't wait to see when she is done. Our ENT also said they highly recommend these for children with DS. He wrote a chapter in a book about treating people with DS.
I just wanted to share. If your kiddos have a narrow palate you should look into it. I hope you all have a Happy New Year!

Thanks, Renee. That isn't something I'd have considered, but it sure does make sense. We'll keep a good eye on Stevie's bite. For now, her bite is great, but you never know how things will change as they grow - and man, is she growing!

That's great, Renee! I asked our dentist about a palate expander several years ago and he totally blew it off.....sure wishing I had pursued that!! I've heard good things about what it can do for speech.
I want to hear how it goes!

Pat, I will have to ask him. It was a medical book. Ok we have made 34 adjustments to this thing and the results are AMAZING! Her dimples are starting to show and her teeth now have a gap between them. Before they were right on top of each other. The teeth are also sitting on each other instead of the underbite. I am so excited!! She is a trooper.
