They didn't refuse him, they said he wasn't ready for the classes yet. They want for him to get the most he can out of the classes - they don't want to cheat him out of real understanding by pushing him through just because his classmates are going. This isn't public education we're talking about here - it's religious education. There is no time table for when it must be done, and therefore leniency for those who won't really grasp the lesson. The priests have not denied him; they've delayed him in hopes of giving him a better understanding of the faith.

Im not sure how I feel about this. What if he really never understands fully? Lauren prays every night and knows about God and Jesus. She knows right from wrong at times. It is a very interesting topic..

Some will never understand fully - forever innocent. That's no bar to Heaven. Still, the amount of stuff you have to understand for Salvation is not much and the faith required for believing what you've learned is given by God. IMO, kids who are forever more childlike than the rest of us have faith in bucketloads.
"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast." Eph 2:8-9 Even if the work of understanding is never accomplished, nor the work of accepting the sacriment of the eucharist, God is gracious and just and merciful.

"Some will never understand fully - forever innocent. That's no bar to Heaven." I agree completely, Chris!

A non-practicing agnostic has no business commenting on this thread. But a snip from Morris West's The Clowns of God, with the contents of which I do not fully agree, "‘I know what you are thinking. You need a sign. What better one could I give but to make this little one whole and new? I could do it, but I will not. I am the Lord and not a conjurer. I gave this mite a gift I denied to all of you — eternal innocence. To you she looks imperfect — but to me she is flawless, like the bud that dies unopened or the fledgling that falls from the nest to be devoured by ants. She will never offend me, as all of you have done. She will never pervert or destroy the work of my Father’s hands. She is necessary to you. She will evoke the kindness that will keep you human. Her infirmity will prompt you to gratitude for your own good fortune … More! She will remind you every day that I am who I am, that my ways are not yours, and that the smallest dust mite whirled in the darkest spaces does not fall out of my hand … I have chosen you. You have not chosen me. This little one is my sign to you. Treasure her!’"
