Got a text last night from Emily...but it was too involved and spelling was correct...so know she didnt send it or the pic...it said "I accedentally flooded the bathroom and ruined the kitchen ceiling" It was accompanied by a photo of the ceiling with a small light fixture that had come partly loose. (she really doesnt use the camera).
I tried to call her this AM but her phone is off so texted her back. Question??? I am sure they sent this hoping we would offer to help...but are we responsible? This is foster care and they are well compensated for what they do plus she pays a lot for 'rent' out of her SSI. But they know we could afford to help and common sense says I should offer...
We have done lots of nice things for the family and the other girls through the years she has lived there.
I imagine she put the plug in and then went into her room to unpack from her trip and didnt ck on the water in time. Guess they do not have an overflow protector.
We have a lot of expenses coming up...and sigh...guess this will just be one more.

I think it was ill-advised to have a tub without an overflow protector, especially with sn adults living there. I don't think you owe them anything for it - it was an accident after all. I would think that homeowner's insurance would cover most of it. I also think it's rude ahd disengenuous of them to text you from Em's phone as if she had sent the text. If they want help with the deductible, they should ask straight up. I'd say ignore it unless you think it will mess up relationships.

Just letting it ride until I finally do get to talk to Emily...I am sure everyone was upset just like we all would be if our kitchen ceiling started to fall down...LOL. But can just imagine how poor Em must feel...so do want to visit with her.

Poor Emily! I wonder if she was too upset to call or text you so they did it for her. I don't know what I would do. Yes, the homeowner's insurance will pay for the repairs but they may have a hefty deductible. I know ours is $1,500.
Sorry, Jackie, I have no words of wisdom. You have given Emily so much independence so I guess you really shouldn't feel it is your responsibility to pay the deductible. I hope that makes sense.

well still a bit in the dark about it...Em seems ok...and we found out it was a clogged toilet that kept running...so I think it is really a home plumbing problem rather than negligence on her part. Imagine like anyone whose ceiling is dripping...your first inclination is to assign blame...but not sure...hopefully getting the whole story today.

That happened recently at our home - an upstairs toilet over-flowed and the one responsible just didn't realize (flush and run?), by the time we got the water off, there was water running down the a/c vent and into the basement, but no ceiling fell in - a few soggy seams, maybe. It would take some serious water in a short amount of time to make a load big enough to take down the ceiling, otherwise it would spread out and drip out the seams. It's odd.

Hopefully the foster parents don't continue to blame Emily. We had a similar problem several years ago. We went out for the day and didn't realize we had a leak from the pipe to the toilet. When we came home and opened the kitchen door a whole sheet of drywall had fallen from the ceiling and strips of drywall tape were hanging from around the hole. It was a HUGE mess. Hopefully they have good coverage and a fairly low deductible. At the same time, texting from Emily's phone was tacky. Best of luck with the whole mess.
