Haven't been on this site for awhile..miss UnoMas. Still the best site ever. Eric has been pretty good. I can't believe he's almost 12! I remember when I found this site and you guys took me "in". It was very comforting to know I wasn't alone. I need to ask again for your support and prayers. Seems Mr. Eric has developed a Choleastoma in his right ear. For those of you who don't know what this is ( I didn't, and I'm a nurse), its a benign granuloma type tumor, but it acts like a cancer in the way it destroys surrounding tissue and bones. It can erode the tiny bones in the ear and affect the hearing, damage facial nerves, and can infect the thin bone covering of the brain...nasty crap! We are going for a CAT scan on Tuesday to see the extend of the growth. The next step will be surgery to remove it. I'm hoping its not too large and hasn't done much damage. The surgery is about 4 hours, and will require a fairly large incision behind the ear. I'm praying we won't have to do this because the recovery will be quite challenging. Has anyone else experienced this? If so, any info would be greatly appreciated. I am asking for prayers for my little guy...he's been a trooper thru all of this. He's a very tuff kid..like all of our kids on Uno. Thanks for listening.. love, Dolly

Hi, Dolly, Sorry to hear that you and Eric have to deal with this. Don't know much about it. My sister had something similar years and years ago. Specialist in Memphis gave her a bionic ear. Well, something like that, replaced all or parts of hammer, anvil, and stirrup with some artificial bones. Long term follow up to keep tabs on how well it worked. Think she can hear better than I can now. Would think things may have changed a bit by now. Hope it turns well for Eric without too much discomfort, distress, and hassle. -- Bob

So sorry that Eric has to go through this, Dolly. Will be praying for a good outcome. Do you remember Radonna from here? I believe her son, Kaden had this same thing many years ago. She is on FB, and I'm sure she'd be happy to talk to you about it.

Our son, Logan, had a similar surgery in January. He had a C-T scan that didn't actually confirm the cholesteatoma, but the neurotologist was 90% certain it existed anyway.
When the Dr. came out of surgery, he said Logan was one of the 10 most difficult surgeries he ever performed (not what we wanted to hear from the top doc in the area). It wasn't a cholesteatoma . . . rather, an old tube had gone back IN the ear canal (rather that out, as assumed). It had attached itself to his first hearing bone and he had to use a laser to cut the tube from the bone. He then cleaned out the whole area (similar to when there's a cholesteatoma), grafted the bone back in place, grafted the ear drum, and closed up the stitches behind Logan's ear.
Logan wore a huge ear cover for several days (which he tolerated much better than I ever expected). After 2-3 weeks, he went back under anesthesia to have the drainage wick removed. We're finally off all drops and ointments and Logan was just cleared for swimming as of last week (yea!). He'll have to ear ear plugs and an ear bandit (headband), but we're fine with that. The neurotologist said that Logan will remain in his care for at least 2 years to watch the healing, the scar tissue, and the grafts. Replacing the hearing bones with prosthetic one(s) still isn't out of the question, but things are healing well at this point in time and we're not expecting that to happen.
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. I'm sorry Eric's having to go through this, but I'm happy to report that it wasn't as bad as my fears and Logan did so very well with everything.
