Hi there
My son is going into junior high (grade 7) next year. He is in an inclusive school. I have to make the decision between putting him in a special needs school or keeping him in mainstream. Right now he has a 1:1 EA. He has some behavior issues and is a flight risk.
The principal is saying that she doesn't think he will be able to transition from one class to another easily and they will have to look at a different model for him if he stays there. Has anyone here had any experience with a different model once they got to junior high? For instance pull outs, resource rooms etc.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Kellie. I havent been on in a long time. I saw your post. My son is 13 and is technically in 8th grade even though he is more on a developmental much lower than that. He has always been in a special needs school except kindergarten. Every year i wrestle with this but its good you have options. Sometimes there not alot of options. When he was going transition from elementary to middle school, some said he may be okay in an inclusive setting. We asked the District to let us tour and visit two other public middle schools (one in district and one out) to see their programs. And then we also visited the program for only special needs school. One program, althuogh it was in a public school, the kids had a wing to themselves but were very limited to access to the rest of the school. The other program i felt was just not good. The special needs school had way more resources, computers, adaptive gym, therapists on site, big rooms, full size kitchens for lifeskills and academic resources. Basically out of everything we observed, we decided to keep in a special needs high school. If your son is already in an inclusive program and you feel its safe, i would first see what you can do to keep him in that setting since you have come so far with it. You can always move him later into an inclusive setting. Of course, only you will know your gut feeling of wht will work. Good luck! i know how hard it is to choose!

Thanks Monique. We are keeping him where he is for the moment. He has a good aide and the school is really supportive. We still have to see what the next year is going to look like. He still has behavior issues and the kids are starting to pull away which breaks my heart. I looked at some special needs options but they are far away and he would be put in with other kids with behaviors and I want him to model good behavior. There are positive and negatives to it I guess. I hope to get through the next two years and then switch him to a different program where he can start to build those relationships with kids like him. My biggest concern is friends. That is my main thing to work on this year. Oh and getting him through the school year!

Our goal is get Ethan through the 8th grade in an inclusive setting, and I have a specific reason for wanting to do so. I've seen many young adults with DS (mostly boys, LOL) who are pretty inappropriate with the opposite sex. Puberty is a tough time for kids without special needs, and bound to be even more challenging for ours. I think these next few years are pretty critical to learning how to interact appropriately with the opposite sex, so we are going to continue to try to make the junior high years work in an inclusive setting. I think the kids who have known him since preschool are going to be kinder about teaching those lessons than the general public is likely to be!

Lol. I get the inappropriate comments thing for sure. It's on going here. He has even stolen all of my fitness magazines and set them up around his room and calls them his girls.

well samantha is in the 7 grade. most of her studies are in one room. she does go to science class with the reg kids but sam has an aide with her i believe. she has lunch in the cafe with her class. sammy seems to be doing okay with school and she likes school/ sue
