We had Andrew's IEP today and it did not go well to say the least. I know the laws and what schools are "supposed to do" but I asked repeatedly for the district to get education and teach the teachers and his para how to modify the curriculum for Andrew. I was told "This 4th grade math curriculum can not be modified." This was said after they told me his Para was struggling with modifying his work and the SPED teacher has been busy and hasn't seen him in a classroom setting in 6 weeks and doesn't have the time to help his para. Their solution? Throw him into the resource room where there is only one child his age with severe needs who is also nonverbal going against his goal of interacting with his peers to work on communication and speech skills. Unacceptable. Totally unacceptable to me. Ofcourse we rejected everything they suggested. Sorry I just had to vent. I am beyond upset by this districts whole attitude.

I'm so sorry you're having to deal with this. Any chance you could bring in an advocate? Kim

Thank you kim. It is just so frustrating to sit and listen to them and see them blatantly ignore the law. Our solution? I am taking him out of the school district and will be homeschooling him starting at vacation (next Friday). I submitted all the paperwork and got my approval letter today. He will still get all his therapies through the district. I have joined a home school group and may have the opportunity to work with the kids in the extended day program so he will have plenty of social interaction. I feel like a huge weight has been lifted. Feeling good and looking forward. Trisha

I'm glad you have the option of homeschooling. It sounds like it will work well for you!
