Hi everyone!! I just have a quick question. Andrew had blood taken last Friday at the ped's. He said they would be checking his thyroid and lead. ok.. nothing abnormal there. The lab tech could not find a vein in either arm and I was told to come back and try again this week (story for another time). >:(grrrr...So I came home and did what I know I should NEVER do....Yup.. I read and tried to figure out what was written on the lab paper for Andrew's blood. They should have known better then to send me home with this paperwork for the weekend , LOL!! Ok, I know some...like T4 total and TSH are thyroid, lead and blood rep lead are obviously for the lead test. What I don't know is what Zinc is for or "ery zinc protop"? Why would he be taking a blood test for levels of Zinc in Andrew's blood? He doesn't have any heart defects, and I'm a little stumped as to why he would be checking his zinc levels.
I know, I know.... I never should have even tried to figure it out but I can't stop wondering why he's looking at his zinc levels. Any guesses? Thanks guys!!! Nosey Trisha ;D
PS.... If you could explain it in "child language" so I can understand it better, THAT would be helpful!! Thanks!

lol, Zinc is a pretty common blood test in our kiddos, A lot of peds do it because our kiddos have a tendency to be low in those levels. Its routine and I wouldnt freak out over it Trust me I have freaked over some blood tests before as I always look at what the lab orders read before I take her down to lab

sometimes they test zinc for poor growth. Don't fret... no biggie and I ALWAYS ask for the results of Olivias and Jeffs blood tests. At the clinic the next time we go in they will print out a copy of the last lab test for me.... You have every right to be nosy Ask me I am MRS KRAVITZ!!!!!! Once when Liv was in the hospital they left her GIANT BINDERS of her medicall information. WELL the nurse walked in grabbed it from me and sqid I shouldn't read it. WELL WELL... I asked the docs next time and they said YES of course u can just not when we are using it.

Don't know anything about the zinc test. But, was wondering if they tried to get blood from the back of his hand. The last time Jason was in getting his thyroid checked they couldn't get a vein in his arm either and resorted to his hand. It wasn't pleasant, but it wouldn't have been pleasant to try and get him back in that chair a week later either!

Thanks for the info.!! Jessie... I have to say it was not at all easy to get Andrew back in the chair either. The minute we walked in the door, he remembered and started squirming to get down (I think he was trying to make a run for it) then he screamed the whole time. The poor kid. Steff...That's funny you mentioned the poor growth thing because the Ped said he had LOST weight and had dropped on the chart. And my first thought was hmmm he doesn't FEEL like he's lost any weight. And as for those "growth charts" well I have had about enough of them. I told the Ped that he needed to either get a growth chart for DS or don't bother showing me it anymore..LOL! I have never been so bold in my whole life! Boy did it feel good. Maybe a little too good.... oh oh watch out world!!! LOL!!!!!! -Trisha

Trisha, just wondering if his thyroid was checked? I know what you mean about the growh charts, but sometimes a drop will indicate hypothyroidism.

Valerie.....That was one of the tests on the paper(his thyroid). He did have his thyroid checked when he turned 1 and it came back normal. He is now almost 19 months and his Ped said it was time to do another one. I haven't got any results back yet but if I don't hear anything by tomorrow afternoon, I think I'll call. Thanks for the heads up! -Trisha

Trisha, just wondered how Anderew's thyroid labs came back?
If you remember, Nicholas had a couple procedures done last week, and I had asked if we could check his TSH while he was under just to rule out any problems. Well, turns out he DOES have hypothyroidism! He wasn't even showing any symptoms!

You know what..... I haven't heard a thing! I'm starting to get a little ticked. I am going to have to call his Ped tomorrow.... but my way of thinking is no news is probably good news.
I'm happy you thought to ask for Nicholas' TSH to be tested. Did they say what they will do now? Did they put him on medication? Imagine if he WASN"T tested?! That was really a good call on your part! Since he wasn't showing any symptoms maybe you caught it just at the beginning?( if there is such a thing). Mother's intuition or instinct, whatever you want to call it, good for you! Please let me know how he's doing. -Trisha How long did it take for you to get the results of the blood test back?

Well, this was an ENT from Des Moines, so they just called me and gave me the results and told me to go to his regular Dr here to see about medicine, etc.
As for how long it took, he had his stuff done last Wed, and I just got the call today, but they have been out of the office. Depends on where you go. Something about the way TSH is tested (the actual labwork), takes longer and more expensive than other tests. Our small local hospital only does them twice a week. So if you had blood drawn Mon, they may not test it until Wed. But in Des Moines, they test it right away. So if you were not at a small one, I'm sure they have your results done.
