Man oh man oh man...............I know we've talked a lot here about our kids having reflux. I have had it myself for several years and have taken Prevacid off and on. (mostly OFF). The night before last, I had a horrible experience and it started making me worry about the experiences kids/babies with Ds might be having.......and not able to tell us about it! Sorry to be so graphic here, but this experience has forced me to get on top of my own problem. I would hate to think any child would go through this.
So..........I was sound asleep and suddenly found myself sitting upright and choking HARD. I realized that what had happened was that I had "refluxed" a LOT of stomach acid and aspirated it before I could wake up and sit up in bed. The burning in my lungs was unbelievable!!! And, I ran to the bathroom to drink as much water as I could get down to flush my throat......but the acid in my windpipe wasn't going anywhere. I can't begin to describe how painful and scary it was! I sat up for over an hour, coughing and getting that gunk out of my lungs and later wheezing all night long. I've had that "heartburn" feeling in my throat/chest many times before, but nothing ever like this. It still burns, deep inside my chest. I kept thinking how easy it would be for a baby or child with Ds to go through this and to not understand where that horrible pain was coming from.

Geez Susan, that's sounds awful! You're right, just think about all the little ones that go through that and have no idea why it's happening!

I can't imagine going through that, let alone being a baby and going through it.

My husband has severe reflux and has had aspiration episodes as well. It is scary for me to watch and I am not the one going through it! I really feel bad for our kiddos that do this. So many of them can't communicate that they are going through and it must be horrible! My husband takes nexium and it works pretty well for him. We also have the head of the bed elevated six inches and it helps a bit too. I hope you feel better soon.

A~ I know that I aspirated for sure. And I called the doc and got my prescription for Prevacid renewed (pharmacy said it lapsed because I hadn't gotten it filled in several months). I'm monitoring myself for any signs of pneumonia, and praying it never happens again. Can't tell you how bad I now feel for any babies who do this!! It literally felt like liquid FIRE inside my lungs and throat. And yes, I was very nervous about going to sleep last night. I'm being a bit more careful about what I eat at night too.

wow Susan I know when I had reflux terrible about 9 years ago they did the scope and found out I had a Hiadel (sp) hernia and I had to get rid of my water bed... That really helped me...You're so right about our kids how they must not understand and when they wake up in the night and need a drink that it is really needed..Hope your doing better Hugs Annie S

It really is hard to think about kids going through this. I've always just (naively?) assumed that when they refluxed, it was more like regurgitating their food back up........a bit gross, but didn't realize how PAINFUL it can be. That old stomach acid is just that......ACID! I can't believe babies don't cry and cry afterward. I nearly did!!!

Susan, I am soooo glad you posted this personal account. The more details the better. Alyssa had reflux as a baby and then Justin also has it....still does. Small kiddos just can't tell you exactly how they are feeling. Hearing an account from an adult sure helps put this in perspective. I sure hope you started taking your meds!!!!!.....and didn't get aspiration pneumonia to boot!!!!!!
