What do you think are the pros and cons of a child with DS moving around in programs?? Chris has moved from in district to out of district and there are now 2 schools that I want to visit in September, that may or may not take him till he is 14. I was advised they may take him next year even thou he doesn't turn 13 till December and their policy is they must be 14 to enter BUT they may make an exception I have decided to wait to visit these programs till September or October so that I can see the population of kids he would be with and to also see the way the class is run next school year. But on the same hand Colin and I are tossing around what may outweigh the benefits of moving him again?? even thou it may be a better program in certain areas, how much does stability count, KWIM?? Although I do believe Chris is happy where he is, I do think these programs may benefit him more, Hmmmm Any thoughts?? CC

Well Ms. CC....I'm sure I won't be telling you anything you haven't already thought of.....but if the programs/schools you will be visiting will be for a relatively long term....several years.....then the temporary upset could be well worth it in the long run. Think how nice it would be to know that his school would not change for a few years. whew. If the environment is considered by Chris to be more "adult" or grownup or whatever, maybe he would be excited too. I think if its appropriate and you have pretty much decided its a go, taking Chris to tour and getting his involvement would be a good thing....see how he reacts. Course, you would know best if this is the thing to do with Chris or not. I like the idea of visiting after it starts....otherwise how can you possibly know now......especially if this mix of kids are going to be with him for quite some time.

I think kids are resilient w/ or w/o having DS. I also agree w/ Susan he wouldn't be moving for a long time after that if all goes well. Pat Pat

I agree with what Trish said...long term benefits may be there, depending on what you see when you visit the programs. The benefits of the new program may outweigh the benefits of short term stability and friendships. Trust your gut!! You'll know the right thing to do....
