Have any of you Michigan folks been to the U of M DS clinc and can you explain to me exactly what it is and does? I am also looking into some advice regarding a behaviour expert to help with John's shyness.
Thanks in advance!!

Nope, I don't have any experience with it, but if you find something out I would be very interested myself!

Carolyn,
We have been to the clinic a couple of times for a yearly review. It is still very much a start-up clinic, and the doctor who runs it is Dr. Joseph Hornyak, who is a physiatrist (physical and rehabilitative medicine) who has a twelve year old son with DS himself.
His goal is to build it into a clinic like those at many other major hospitals, but it's not there yet. We go each year to support the clinic because I'd like to see it grow, but so far there hasn't been much he could recommend to us that we weren't already doing. For parents who aren't particularly informed about the necessary screenings, therapies and treatments, he has lots of information. If you are pretty hooked up already, he may not have a lot to offer yet.
I can e-mail him and see if he has connections of that sort yet, if you like. That isn't something I have inquired about for Ethan, so I don't know. Let me know! Laura

Hey Laura,
Thanks for the info. So . . . is this just a regular clinic that we can call and get Jason into or does it require a referral, etc.?
I don't feel particularly "hooked up", so he may be able to offer us stuff - especially with his son being the same age as Jason!
Can you pass along the contact info - phone number to the clinic?
Thanks.

Thank you so much!! I am looking for advice I guess as well as connections- I really don't like the ped. I currently see, although John is never sick so we only see her 1 time a year for a check up. I would be interested in getting a new dr. Would this guy be the dr or would he just refer us to a ped? I am definitely looking for help regarding his shyness and helping him to cope better. Thanks again for the phone number!

Hi Carolyn,
Are you by any chance in mid-Michigan? We really like Jason's ped a lot if you are interested I can pass along his name to you. He is at MSU's Children's Health Clinic. We don't have to take Jason in very often either, the yearly physical, an occasional sinus infection, that's about it. However, I am interested in getting any service that we can for Jason as well, whether it's ST, OT, behavioral, whatever. It might be good to get into a clinic where the doctor has first-hand experience with Ds and at kind of a start-up point with the clinic.

Jessie: I live in southern Michigan, near Tecumseh/ Adrian. Lansing would be a bit far for us to travel, but Ann Arbor is only about 35 minutes. I am really interested in the DS Clinic. John is heading for Kindergarten in the fall and I would love to get in over the summer and get some ideas going before he starts. He is a very very shy child- he general behavior is quite good- he is just nutty shy and anxious so I think Kindy will really challenge his comfort levels.
