Does anyone have any suggestions on how to stop diarrhea? Cooper started vomiting on Friday and went into Saturday. Sunday he started in with diarrhea and still has it. I have been told on numerous occasions that they do not like to give meds to small kids with diarrhea, they want it to run its course. I am really needing a break from all of this and I am sure that Cooper would agree with me. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks

My only advice is to give him rice cereal and bananas. Poor little guy! How old is he now?

Yuck... we had something similar just go through my house too. Andrew did the throwing up thing for 2 days and also ended with diarrhea. He only had that for a day though. I have to agree with giving him bananas, see if that helps. I have to say you are sooo right....you do need a break!! I hope everyone is well soon. Good luck! -Trisha

unsweetened applesauce, crackers, toast, you know the drill! Yogurt is actually really good for replacing the good bacteria. I give them the light kind sweetened with splenda when they are sick so the sugar doesn't make it 10x worse. If he will eat plain, power to ya, but mine never would! It really should run it's course, but if it goes too much longer, I would call the ped. As long as you keep an eye on him to make sure he isn't drying out, he should be okay!

Cooper turned 2 in November!! Thanks for the suggestions! Something helped, maybe bananas maybe applesauce. He wouldn't eat any yogurt and he will not eat crackers or toast. He is a picky eater anyway. He is not going as much but still has lingering diarrhea!! I called the pediatricians office and they told me to give another day. Cooper was recently diagnosed with antibiotic induced C-Diff, that is a bacterial infection in the intestines. That has been over a month ago but I still have that in the back of my mind that is whats still lingering around. We can't be sure unless they do stool cultures. We took the meds for that and it did actually get better but now the diarrhea again. I am at my wits end with this stuff!

C-Diff will always be in his system. Meds cause it to inflame.
I would have him tested to see if he is having a break out again.
BRAT diet works well. Pedialite frozen pups are great for Ashley.
Good luck and PLEASE get him tested. C-diff is very bad. Also you can get it and spread it thru the house.

Sounds like recurrent C-diff. I'd ask the doc to do a culture just to make sure........because if it is C-diff, he's going to need treatment (possibly a different one than he had last time) before it will totally clear up. If the BRAT diet does not work, he may need to let his intestines "rest" by doing only clear liquids for a day or so. It's miserable.......we see it a LOT in the nursing home after patients have been on antibiotics.

I was going to suggest the BRAT diet as well. We'll be joining the BRAT diet today!

Antibiotics are great for killing bad bacteria, but they have a nasty habit of doing in some of the good ones as well. Anytime someone in our house has to take a high dosage of antibiotics, I start giving them supplements of acidophilus. You can buy them in capsules, or even in powder for children. It helps replenish the good bacteria that your gut needs. You might ask your doctor if probiotics would help. Here is some info: www.usprobiotics.org/basics/

Several months ago Justin was diagnosed with C. Diff. The Dr put him on Flagyl which cleared up the diarrhea. The BRAT diet is good as well as yogurt to help slow the diarrhea. Another thing I do is daily probiotic.....acidophilus daily. This helps prevent any C.Diff caused by giving him antibiotics by keeping the normal flora up to par in the GI system. His ped agreed to this, and it works. I hope he gets better soon.

We finally cleared all that up!! We started the Acidophalus!! We had taken Flagyl for I think 10 days when he was diagnosed with the C-diff. Cooper is better and has had some pretty good weeks in the past few weeks. None of the usual head congestion, runny nose, cough, etc. I am so happy the precious boy is finally better. He deserves to be well for a while. Thanks for all the suggestions. Wendey

Sorry I didn't see this earlier. The way to stop it is, for a child, make a fruit smoothe (ie strawberries in a blender) & add 1 tsp apple cider vinager. No, the fruit won't make him looser, & it will work quickly. I make smoothies for everyone, then add the vinager in his. John-John had an antibotic that just wiped his system out. I just couldn't figure out how too get the apple cider vinager in him, he doesn't like slushies & besides it takes too long to freeze the apple juice with it in it. It also works for adults. I pour a glass of juice before I take it. I pour a little in a cup, about a tsp or a little more, don't breathe, drink it, then 1/2 your juice, then breathe, then the other 1/2 of your juice. The juice is only to kill the flavor of the vinager! Pat P.S. I used acidophalus for days & it wasn't working fast enough. I hid it in his pb & j.
