Joshua is a month old now, and his skin is still peeling and flaking. I'm used to my children doing this the first few days after birth, but his seems to be getting worse instead of better.
I didn't know until I read a few minutes ago that dry skin is another thing that is common among children with DS. We're learning a lot! :-)
I'm reluctant to use soap on his skin, so I've just been using plain water to wash him. I tried rubbing baby oil into the flaky spots, but it didn't do much good. Does anyone have a "tried and true" skin care program, or maybe suggestions about a good cleanser to use that might replace soap?
Thanks!

My son is almost 2. The only place we've had dry skin problems is his cheeks, and they've been dry from the get-go. His Dr. suggested Curel lotion which has worked pretty good. We put it on in the morning after we wash his face, and in the evening after his bath. Cetaphil is another good lotion. Sometimes in the winter, they get VERY dry, and then we just put a little vaseline on them after we wash his face. This seems to do the trick for us.

We swore by Aquaphor when Ethan was younger and had that problem. I quit using soap on Ethan's face and he got much better. Young babies can be prone to eczema too, especially during the dry winter months, so maybe have your doctor take a look at it. If it is eczema, try using a 1/2 % hydrocortisone cream on it, that should fix it right up!

I am an Aquaphor fan, too. I use it on Sarah's face after every bath.

We like Aquaphor too. And the Aveeno baby cream (in the tube) worked well too for MM but her skin wasn't terribly dry - just her cheeks in the winter mostly. Aquaphor also makes a baby wash, I think? It might not be soap-based but am not 100% sure about that. Or look at the phisoderm baby wash - that was what we were given in the hospital to bathe MM with. laurie

The whole family uses the same kind of soap here ... Dove for sensitive skin. Mark has sensitive skin and my ped. said it is good for the kids too. I do not use it, or any soap, on the kids faces ... just water. I use Johnson baby lotion on Laura's body and Vaseline on her cheeks. Some days, usually when it is really cold and we have been out, I put the Vaseline on her cheeks at each diaper change (or every other, depending on how much she needs).
Also, Laura had very flacky skin when she was born and the ped said not to put anything on it for awhile (maybe the first month or two ... sorry I can't remember exactly, but it seemed like a long time). He said it would not hurt her, it would just prolong it because the skin "needed" to flake off. Didn't make too much sence to me and my mom tried sneaking lotion on her. Anyway, the flaking did stop and then I started using the lotion all over her body, giving added attention to the dry patches.

Oh do we know dry skin in this house. Poor Emily was the worst out of all of us. Now it's just her face poor bug!
Aquaphor by the tub. Rub him down while still moist. No moisturizer is going to do much unless the skin is moist. If you're afraid of soap, try Cetaphil - they make a lotion and a cleanser. One's pink and the other is blue. Used that on my son (non ds) and it was very mild.
Good luck. It will get better. I've seen such an improvement in Em's skin - took about 3-4 weeks.

Aquphor on both faces after every bath. No more chapped red cheeks! You can use it all over them. Also, I think it's gerber that makes teeny bodies cream. That is very nice as well.

We've had luck with Aeveno as well. What seems to work the best is plain old fashioned vaseline. It is geasey but I load him up before he gets his pjs on and he "moisturizes" overnight. Also it has helped to run a humidifer in his room.

I am a big fan of Eucerine. And for the really hard to fix dry spots Hunter has a perscription cream. Johnson's products seem to make his skin more irritated too...
