Hi i have a 2 year old son with DS Benjamin and he is always sick with congetstion he snores and always has a runny nose . I have tken him to the doctor everytime he is sick and they tell me he is not sick it is in his nose the congetsion and thought maybe i should talk to hi ENT to see if maybe he should have his Anoids removed well his ENT oppted not to do that. He is sick again this time it is bad he sounds like a he is barking when he coughs and coughs for a long time . The doctor gave him an antibiotic and a steroid and put him on nebulizer traetments. I am just wondering if anyone else has experienced this? I am so frustrated because i feel like i am not doing the best i can for him and i am SO SO SO tired of being looked at like my son has the plague when he coughs in public. Charissa

i would opt for a 2nd ENT opinion. Jameson has had an ent since he was born. Pediatricians always seemed to miss his ear infections. we have done the steriod nebulizer thing around the same age. It does seem to get better as he as gotten older so that will help too.
Does he get ear infections alot? if so the route usually is tubes (which help alot) then surgery. Jameson is 5 on his 2nd set of tubes and has sleep apnea so we finally agreed to get his tonsils and adenoids out. I hope it helps him.
Definately ask other parents with DS kids what ENT they go to. It helps if you have one that has dealt with DS kids before.

he already has tubes in he has had them in since he was 10 months old i think his ent is good and very honest he said he doesn't want to take his adnoids out now beacuse the recovery time is horrible . i think it is my Doctor who is not doing the right thing about him always being sick.

Well, coming from having son with almost a chronic cough since he was a wee little one (he is 8 now) it IS VERY possible to have some congestion without sick/infection. Russell has chronic reflux which makes them "wet" inside... it's just who he is... trust me..I stopped going to the docs when he was around 3 or so because I'd go in due to his coughs.. they said he wasn't sick. Also.. does your son drink cow's milk? Cow's milk can produce allergies in kids that are JUST like infections.. same exact symptoms... we had to take Russell off of cow's milk for a few years actually. Oh.. and on the recovery time on the adnoid removal? I think it's hit and miss in ANY child... with and w/o DS. They said kids are "out" a week.. Russell had T&A and was only miserable for 2-3 days... mostly 2 days miserable. So... it just depends on the child.. not the opinion of the doc if you ask me Good luck!!! A.

Charissa, maybe you could try having Benjamin evaluated by a Pulmonologist to rule out some type of allergy which is causing the congestion which in turn is making him cough because of all the drainage. Does he happen to have dark circles under his eyes if so that is one sure sign of allergies. Hope it helps and hope Benjamin is feeling better real soon. Justin use to get sick all the time usually November thru the spring thaw, at one point he was hospitalized 6 times with pneumonia which kicked in his asthma all this within a 5 month period, he did have the T/A when he was 2 and it did help quite a bit and like someone has mentioned it depends on the child because Justin was fine the next day.
