I have been reading the thread about reading an speaking.... I want to offer these observations...and these are from spending quite a bit of time with my 6 year old kindergarten grandaughter. She does not have DS. She is an emerging reader and while I was with her she discovered the JOY of reading for pleasure and content...not just word calling. She wanted one of those repoductions of the old thingy and Jane readers. Most of you are too young to have used them to learn to read with....but ...NOT ME!!!!! LOL. I remember in first grade sitting at my classroom...table....and keeping my reader open in the drawer and instead of listening to the teacher ...reading ahead in the story of thingy and Jane and baby Sally...and Spot and Puff....(like I eagerly read Grisham today...LOL). I realized after the first story that Hayden, too, was hooked on the content...not just calling words. She actually got up late that night...turned on her light and stayed up reading it cover to cover...all 108 pages! My theory is.........that this book is written about real people in real life situations...not fantasy...pigs dressed in skirts.....ladybugs who eat peanut butter sandwiches...etc. The vocabulary is low...and interest is high...at least for a kindergartner. I then went out and bought her another one ....which she read non stop....cover to cover. She had been struggling up to this point with getting started with her reading and had been treating it like a "chore" rather than a pleasure. I think its too bad we cant get our beginning readers into more books like these ....books with stories they can REALLY relate to.....family sagas on a 5 yr old level...LOL. I am thinking about writing some of these...."chapter books"....that are more like a little novel rather than just a quicke read. Also being stimulated by her interest while I was in Austin I discovered these great two books.....which I think would be terrific for our kids in terms of reading aloud. search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbnInquiry.asp?userid=R188bed9VB&isbn=0316363502&itm=1Jackie mom to Emily 25

thingy and Jane!!! LOL! I am a teacher and we were just talking about that series at lunch last week. It seems that everyone used that reading series through the '60's. You are right, they were BORING.
Good advice.

There's a reason they've come back. Gotta love Thingy and Jane, LOL! Amazing when you take a look at what words are getting replaced here. God save the English language! Another thing that really needs to come back to the classroom is good ol' Mother Goose. I have friends who are teachers and a friend who's a principal and they wish the Goose would be let loose in the classrooms. Do You know a heck of a lot of kids start Kindergarten w/o knowing how to rhyme? There's something to be said about the classics. Apparently I am old too as D.i.c.k. and Jane went to school with me too.
I love your book suggestion - going to pick that up for Ryan who is graduating pre-K in a few weeks. I am going to be such a wreck that day.

My cousin (Meghan's godmother) just bought reproductions of all the BOBBSEY TWIN books for Meghan...I used to love those books, and as soon as she gave them to us, I read every single one of them. Yes, simply written but I really enjoyed them! for anyone interested in getting D.i.c.k and Jane books...I just got a bunch from Lakeside.com (5 large sized paper backs $8 - they have 2 different sets) www.lakeside.com/catalog.asp?CAT=1&ST=KWD&SS=SOR&KWD=thingy+jane&x=12&y=12and Costco had the hardcover one the other day...combines the chapters I think. Jackie - thanks for that book selection, gonna keep that one in mind too. laurie

I mentioned in another post that using a story box for content is a great way to read for the enjoyment and understanding of the story. I gauge wether or not it is working by things like when in the Tiger, Tiger video, Ciarra breaks from the story when the tiger wakes up, covers her moutha dntells me excitedly "oh NO!" She is not just calling words, but digesting the story, which is so important. The story box idea when started very young can help direct a childs attention to the actual story. I really recommend it. As for this early reader, we try to choose books that tell a story but are also not overfull of words. Bob books were ok, but they were not stories, just word families threaded together. I have found the folks who put out Clifford the Big red Dog merchandise have someone on staff who GETS kids. Their storybooks for early readers and their software too are VERY well done. I will have to post the story The Cake Bake tommorrow. It is an involved book, with a true story. Much harder than the 2 I posted. But she really analyzes the story and gets what happened. Im SO proud of her reading, it just keeps getting better and better. Now if we could just get MATH to be so fun.

I know with Regan, my 12 yr old, she was an early reader. So when she was 4 I went to the book store to buy That RICHARD and Jane book LMAO, and they didn't HAVE them anymore. I was use to having those books and thought that was what I would buy to teach Regan to read. They DID show me the BOB books and we bought those. Now those were good and Regan caught on quick. But I think she got bored of them quite quickly too. They are VERY simple but I reccomend them to VERY beginning reading for basics.. small words. Now she is 12 and doesn't need RICHARD and Jane books but I am THRILLED they came back with them! Reece is 4 1/2 and is starting to read so since we don't have BOB anymore, we may try the good ole classics. We are SOOOO not there with Reading with Russell so I will let you all know when I start getting shoes on to cross that bridge... a.

Steff, that is what Russell's teacher this year does. Uses sight words and things THEY know. I know we are also talking phonetics on this thread, but I wanted to share that is what Russell's teacher does too. The kids respond better to seeing words and things THEY know in their world.

Just got back to this post....LOL....guess the board thinks I am a .........smut mouth.........LOL.
I will share a funny however about Haydens reading these books aloud in the car. Hope I do this right..............
Hayden was reading....."Here is D.I.C.K. Go D.I.C.K. go.....etc...lots of sentences about D.I.C.K. in her little six year old reading voice...... And then we hear Emily snickering in the back seat of the car..............then she breaks into full gale laughter.........as Katie and I both do at this point....and when she gets her breath....she says....."I am not even going there..........!!!!!!" LOL
So for anyone who wonders if your kids with DS will ever pick up subtle humor.....answer is obvious.

Oh Jackie ! I have original Thingy & Jane books ! My "uncle" (dad's best friend) was an administrator & gave me some when they were phased out. I had a couple walk away when I loaned them for a movie set so I had to replace them on ebay back about 5yrs ago. I love those but sure wish I had my originals with the stamp form the local school !
Oh & Go Emily ! LOL! My hero!

Yes, I also grew up with Di--ck and Jane. (Gee, what gets read into simple words today.....). Well, I know that week after week the school sends home library books for Ricky with all sorts of fantaseys, etc. She can't understand it at all, and I really can't see how they want to increase her reading comprehension with this.....
