I just started to wonder about how you all handle summers. Our little guy just turned three in March. So all of the past summers we've had EI. He started at our public school in March, and will be done next week until Fall. He doesn't qualify for any summer service (he hasn't demonstrated a loss......GGGRRRR......Don't get me started down THAT road)
Anyhow~ I'm having him evaluated at a private therapy center this week. I'm sure he'll qualify for OT, PT and for sure ST. Right now I'm thinking of opting out of PT, he should get plenty of that with his brother and sister being home. There is a preschool library program that I'm thinking of, so he's around other little people this summer too.
Do you take the summer "off"? Do you seek out therapies? Camps, inclusion programs? Curious of your experiences and what you'd recommend?

Hi there, My little guy, Patrick, turned 5 the end of April. We are starting the public school (if they get it together lol) in August. He just completed his private program where he has been since age 16 months. We have always had private therapy, so will continue during the summer. 2x a week ST and 1 OT. The only other thing we will be trying to accomplish this summer is POTTY TRAINING!!! Oh....boy. Although we have been told we may qualify for some summer funds that can be applied toward swim lessons, soccer camp or other camps/lessons. We will pursue those, too. Mostly, we hope to veg out, sleep in, and hit the drive-movie and the new 16 theatre cinema that just opened. Patrick's becoming quite the movie buff....thank goodness! We also just got a list of four theatres in town that will show children's movies in the mornings for free.

This is the first summer that Jason doesn't have school to go to. Last summer when there were weeks he didn't have school he just went to my cousin's house and played hard all day long!
This summer is different for us because of the ESY issue. We have him enrolled in a 5 week summer day camp, he is going to get a few free ST sessions at MSU (sponsored by our local Capital Area Down Syndrome Assoc.) and there is one week that he is going to another free camp. I'm trying to fill up his summer as much as possible with programs. Even though I work from home, I am SUPPOSED to be working (not on UnoMas all day!), so I really can't be outside with him. And, since he is a little houdini and can't be trusted outside alone, that means he will be cooped up in the house all day with me and that is simply not good for him. Also, when I travel for my job it is always out of state, so then Brian has to take time off of work if Jason is going to be home all day.
Our biggest goal for him this summer is to push hard on ST. Even if that means we all take a major crash course in sign language to advance his skills there as well. It's going to be a working summer for all of us, but since he is going to new camps and there are ton of field trips at camp, he will have a good time.
Good luck this summer everyone!!!!
