Ok, some of you might think I'm terrible, but I have no choice with my daughter who will be 5 shortly, and I cant believe it!!!
When we go places such as the mall, the hospital, the amusement park (ie. Sesame Place is coming up), the outlets, etc. etc. etc., I HAVE to have her in a stroller, for at least part of the way. She refuses to walk, and although she's only 35lbs, she is like lead obviously due to muscle tone and I cant carry her the whole way and I shouldn't have to. Additionally, she's impulsive, and if she's not confined, she'll pull stuff off of racks/shelves, wander, run away, blah, blah, blah.
I've had her in an umbrella stroller, up until recently, because she is purposefully tipping it over onto the side to get to things out of her reach. She can also stand up and walk with it on her butt where ever she wants to go - (it is pretty funny to see from another persons perspective, but it gets old after awhile for me, lol)...and last, but not least, she puts her feet down so you cant push it. Oh, what a pistol I have.
All of the strollers that can handle a higher weight limit and/or age limit are outrageously priced.
What, if any, type of stroller did/do you use and if you remember the price?
Thanks!!!

I don't think you are terrible.. I had Gabe in a stroller for a long time and for the same reasons. He REALLY was a lead weight and would never walk very far without sitting down and refusing to move. I DID find a jogging stroller at a children's consignment shop.. It was a little pricey for my budget but not near as bad as it would have been new and I swear it was heaven sent! Our main entertainment when the kids were little were walks of all kinds and this one also collasped so we could take it on car trips to the park. Now I see them at Target and all kinds of places so good luck in finding one for your needs!

John-John will be 6 the end of July. He is the size of an almost 6 yr old. He weighs 53 lbs. He weighed 51 on his 5th birthday. I did a lot of research: was the wheel covered so he couldn't put his feet in it?, how much weight would it hold?... I knew I needed a jogging stroller to make it long enough to keep his feet off the ground. Well, we got it when he was 3. The stroller holds 75 lbs & 10 lbs in the basket. Most strollers held only 50 lbs. I knew he wouldn't grow out of this one too quickly, a Kelty Joyrider. It was about $300, but it lasts for years. I could have paid less, but he would have out grown that one by 5yo. Anyway that's what I did. You will see it at Sesame Place if you bring Your cell Not your DH's. LOL Pat

Hi there! Sometimes Ryan tires out when we are at an amusement park for long hours. We will rent a stroller if that happens. Boy it gets frustrating when he puts his feet on the wheels . His stamina is pretty good though, and we are using them less and less. A coworker has a child with Ds/Autism and this little-big guy is too much to carry! They requested assistance from their Regional Center. They researched strollers for older children, and found one that was built to handle heavier/bigger children. They presented it to Regional Center who then paid for the stroller. I'm not sure where you live, but maybe you can get the cost of the stroller covered since it is related to his muscle tone. Just a thought.

Our daughter Hannah is six and weighs about 48 lbs. We have had similar problems and about 2 years ago we actually got her a wheelchair. It is not like the typical chairs as it has smaller wheels and actually looks like a stroller but is made to fit her exactly. It is somewhat adjustable and will fit her until she is about 75 lbs. It was pricey- about$3000.00. We had it paid 80% through our private health insurance as medicaid denied it(go figure) and then we picked up the balance. We did have to jump through hoops to get it. Our physical therapist had to write out a big justification to the insurance company stating low muscle tone etc. I know this may seem like a big deal but it has changed our lives for the better and I don't know how we managed without it. I know there are all kinds of grants and funding out there to help with cost. If you have a service coordinator they should be able to help you. The brand name of ours is Convaid - www. convaid.com. The model is called the EZ rider .Oh yeah, it folds up to the size of a golf bag and is actually not too heavy to lift. Hope this helps as I know this situation can be a nightmare! -Heather

We have peg perego strollers. I am really happy with them and though pricey, they are really good and last forever. You can find them discounted online usually with free shipping and when you are done, they seem pretty easy to unload on ebay for a good price.

We have the same issues with Russell...he is now 7 and is 39 lbs and we now have an jogger stroller. We too had to find one that could afford the weight of Russell. Lots of umbrella strollers tend to hold more weight. There ARE also Spec needs strollers but I don't need one of those yet LOL. We bought ours at Burlington Coat Factory and paid about $100-120 for it. The two reasons I needed the jogger style was that they DO tend to have better weight requirements.. there are some that hold up to 100 plus lbs.. ours goes to 50 I think.. 50-75.. but i think it's 50 lbs. And... it has a swivel wheel and Russell's FEET can't get to the wheel! I did research like Pat did with John John... LOL... The joggers with the stationary wheel weren't an option for us anymore. We use to have one, but with the weight now, pushing down in the back to turn the jogger wasn't going to be fun... PLUS, the swivel front wheel was covered better then the stationary one... so Russell couldn't get his feet to the wheel and impede my strolling! This is like what we have ... www.burlingtoncoatfactory.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Section_Id=9552&pcount=&pn=2&Product_Id=380626&sku1=k_s1_72697072&is_baby_depot=1I was using an umbrella stroller for the LONGEST time and I was so silly.. I didn't know WHY the darn thing wouldn't MOVE anymore.... DUH.. it ONLY goes to 30 lbs or so!!!! LMAO... no WONDER!!!!!! Good luck... I don't know what I'd DO without our jogger stroller!!! A.

Well, I'm not a mom. And I don't think Charlie is all that old, will be 6 in July, and weighs only about 40 lbs. But we need to look into getting him a Maclaren Major Special Needs stroller, www.adaptivemall.com/mainbug.htmlHe's got a Kimba special needs stroller we got through early intervention and paid for by health insurance. The good and important thing about it is that it's bus transportable. It's what he's in when we load him on and off the little yellow bus each day. The bad thing about it is that it cost about the same as a used car and I sometimes think it weighs about the same, well, maybe used compact car. Dr. Leshin said they used a Maclaren Major 2000 for Avi. And I know someone who has used a Maclaren for years but is now looking to move up to some Convaid model, expecting some state program to pick up the tab. HTH, Bob

Sounds like someone needs to build a better mousetrap and could stand to make some money off the deal! Bob, sounds like a good job for you - are you as handy with tools as you are with information?
