I have always bought Sarah the Stride Rite Walking Shoes but got some really bad news today.......She's gotten too big! We bought her some Stride Rite Toddler Tech tennis shoes but they have no ankle support. Her new shoes are an 8.5 W and they look gigantic!
She has a wide, flat foot with a very high instep. Her ankles turn in a lot and I am concerned that her new shoes won't give her the support she needs. Any suggestions?

I have never been able to buy Paige low top tennis shoes. The poor kid is always in high top basketball shoes or boots.
We bought her Buster Brown boots for the winter that lace all the way up and over the ankles. I just bought her a new pair of sneakers and I almost choked, Nike Air basketball shoes that are double high tops, up over the ankles with lacing all the way up, and the a velcro strap that goes all the way around the foot.
They are super shoes. She has good balance and stability, but they are expensive. I hate not being able to dress her in girly sandals and things during the summer. She falls alot due to ankle instability and she would really hurt herself in anything other than high tops.

You won't believe it, but the best support I have found are the Smart Fit by Payless. Both of the kids wear them and they are great. I like them 10X better than stride rites.

Our Stride Rite store (not a Stride Rite only, sells other "good brands") usually has great sneakers, and they come in W too. I like the New Balance and Adidas for Meghan...and the Nike Pico too. And I've had really good luck w/ Sketchers for Meghan..not all of them, some are better than others. Meghan is in her last pair stride rites too!! next time she won't fit in them either.
Meghan loves her sneakers so much that last time I went to buy her something different she had a FIT! They were different colors, etc and she told me they HURT each time I put them on...thing was, they were the same exact sneakers as her last pair, just silver and pale blue instead of white and pink.
I luckily found the stride rites that looked almost exactly like the last pair, LOL!
good luck - i hate buying MM shoes! laurie

MY favorite brand is Elefanten for my kids. All my kids wore them for their first pair of shoes once they started walking. They are NOT cheap, can be found at Stride Rite and other places, but they have a bit of an arch support and are flexable... AND, since Russell has that V-shaped - Triangular shaped toes going on, I tend to lean towards shoes with a euro foot bed which does much better for his tooties. I can get good deals at Nordstroms when they have their 1/2 yearly sale.. and our Stride Rites have sales too sometimes. I also like some of Stride Rites tennies for Russell, and I love New Balance.. I just have to make sure whatever I buy him has a ROUND or EURO toe part.
I am told by a few moms, like Kristen said, that Payless has good tennies and shoes that are flexible and have good arch supports. The only thing with me and Payless, I think the boys styles suck for my taste most of the time LOLOL. I am picky on the looks of my kids shoes. Russell can wear low top tennies now that he is older so that gives me more options too.

A - I am with you on the boy's selection! I like WHITE shoes and they have thre styles that are white - two tennies and one dress and he has had all three for the last three sizes of shoes I have bought! I don't know what I will do when he gets to the bigger boy sizes!

Cole won't even keep his shoes on, so most of the time, I am not too choosy, though we tend to go with Nike "first walkers". They are soft, but have some good support, though not around the ankle. However, Cole has a really "mushy" foot, that tends to roll up inside the shoe, as I've mentioned before (toes curl under and he won't straighten them out.) So, we were searching for something that would be easier to put on. Our PT referred us to "Hatchbacks" ; I think their site is hatchbacks.com The shoes velcro on each side, and then bend down in the back so you can just slide his foot in from the back. Its much easier than cramming it in from the top. Plus, they have higher ankle support. The have really cute boys and girls styles, and they are really reasonable, and seem to be great quality. They were developed by a man who had kids in orthotics, so they work well for that too, and the site provides sizing guidelines, if you intend to use them with orthotics.

Another vote for Payless, Smart Fits!
I bought a lot of very expensive pairs of shoes, and our PT wasn't satisified with any of them. She had heard about the Payless shoes and I picked a pair up, needless to say, they worked like a charm. That was just the first pair of many, he wore them out pretty fast while he was scooting, the beauty of payless BOGO (buy one get one) sales!

I also have to say that I am from the old school and I do not put shoes on my kids until AFTER they learn to walk. I think it's better for their feet. BUT... it's funny, Russell didn't walk until he was 3... and he looked and acted like a baby up until and after 3, so I never put shoes on him nor thought I really needed to... and one day, the PT said... "uh, don't you think it's about time to put shoes on him?" LOL... because he walked on the inside of his feet and I was doing him a disservice not putting something with a good arch and ankle support on his foot... OOPS! I am a barefoot kinda gal too..heehee A.

I have to chime in a vote for Payless as well.....Erin always had tiny feet and they were the only store I could find that hard good hard soles for walking in BABY shoes. She is still in the infant/baby size....size 4 !!! But she needs the real support and hard soles. Payless has them.....may not be great for "typical" babies who are this size not walking and shouldn't be in a hard soled shoe but rather a soft fitting one.....but for us....they were / are a life saver !

We are big fans of the Nike Pico shoes as well. Ethan has been wearing them for awhile, and when he was using the Sure Step inserts, we were able to fit the shoe nicely over the insert, and they have a nice flexible sole.
Ethan saw the physiatrist at the Down Syndrome Clinic at U of M yesterday. I was concerned about his walking and wondering if he needed an orthotic again. (He seems a little unsteady on his feet sometimes). The doctor told me he doesn't need any orthotic at this point, maybe when he gets older and a little heavier. He said we need to make certain that he is wearing a shoe with good arch support. Ethan happened to be wearing a pair of cheap tennis shoes from Wal Mart (we just ordered new Picos) and he didn't like the arch support in them. So, we're going to have to be more discriminating when we shoe shop!
A., I'm with you on going shoeless. My husband teasingly calls me a hillbilly all the time. I'm doing a little better about wearing shoes in the summer these days. I'm allergic to the tetanus vaccine, and wandering about without shoes isn't the smartest thing I could be doing!
