Curious to know if you veterans of kids wearing eyeglasses have a favorite brand/kind whatever. LIa is six and needs to wear them now. Should I get cheap frames or flexible ones? nancy

Nancy~ Get the flexible frames!! We originally got some Ralph Lauren frames, which I wouldn't consider to be "cheap", but they lasted all of 3 hours. In the first three weeks of Cole having glasses, we were in the optical shop 4 times!! And in between times, he didn't have any to wear, because we couldn't always find the time to get to the optical center to fix them! We have since gotten some flexible frames (Flex-on brand; there is another brand called something with "Twist" in it that someone said were even better) -- they were only about $25 more, and have had MUCH better luck!

Ryan wears flexon frames. They are kinda expensive - but well worth it. Ryan is very hard on his glasses (but at least he keeps them on almost all the time). They need to be adjusted every now and then because he takes them off forcefully and they end up getting too wide.
There was a short time when Ryan was squeezing his glasses when he was frustrated. That is a perfect example of why I really like the flexible frame! He would have broken them 10 times over if they weren't!!

We do Flex-on too....after a year of agonizing trips to the eye doc to replace meghans NON-flexon frames (thank goodness for the warranty....4 or 5 pairs in a year!) the flex-ons were about $100 more, I think...but totally worth it. She's had them 4 months or so and I haven't been to the eye doc ONCE to have them readjusted, whereas with the old ones it was monthly and sometimes WEEKLY! But they also have a 2 yr warranty, instead of 1 yr (atleast at my place) which helps....if we need it.
one other word of advice. go to a place that knows how to fit little kids....our place specializes in pediatric glasses, and they're so much better....unfortunately we have to pay out of pocket but for this, it's worth it.
good luck - laurie

Yes. The best kind are the ones that stay on the kid's face and don't get broken. It would also be good if the kid doesn't lose them (Chums retainers or a piece of fishing line and a safety pin might help there) or bury them at the bottom of a flower pot on the patio. Just what I've been told. -- Bob
