a friend of Emilys since she was a toddler is having open heart surgery today...please say a prayer for Carey and hold her in your thoughts. A fair number of young adults with DS seem to develop heart problems in their mid 20s. I dont think there is a lot of research done on this age group...but often these appear in apparently healthy individuals out of the blue. Careys might have been different...but her story ...best as I know it is....she was getting ready to have a cyst removed and before the surgery they wanted to do an EKG since she had had two holes repaired at age six months. Her mom says that she had been dismissed from cardiac follow ups at age 5. Apparently the EKG was abnormal...leading to a couple of other tests and her parents were told...the patch over the holes had torn lose (with her growing thru the years??? not exactly sure) and now there are more problems and she has also got to have her mitral valve replaced totally. She is otherwise healthy as a horse...no clues or symptoms.....has been under doctors care on a regular basis....Even had a bout with pneumonia a year or two ago and lots of exams with that...and no one had any idea about this....Its very serious....but wonderful they caught it in time. Carey is actually two years older than Em. Jackie mom to Em 24

I hope to get an update today...Ed dropped by the ICU last night and said her Dad said it had been a rough day but things were going pretty well now.....Ed didnt want to intrude any farther but said the nurses were just charting ...doing routine things...so apparently things were moving along as expected....Her mom had told me two days in ICU so I will call the waiting room later in the AM and post again. Funny, but I spent the whole day myself reliving those stressful 14 hours of surgery Emily went thru to repair her Hirschprungs 22 years ago......I guess thats something you just never really forget...and Emilys anesthesiologist was our best friend from medical school. Today we are going to buy a big card for everyone at Ems party tomorrow to sign and will include some photos from the bash for her. Jackie
