Morning all,
Our infectious disease doc has recommended that Eric recieve the pneumococcal vaccine...not the Prevnar version (which is given to babies under 2yrs), but the vaccine for older kids and adults. It's suppose to be 80% affective against pneumonia, bronchitis, ear infections, and some other nasty stuff. Have any of your kids had this vaccine? If so, were there any side effects...and did it help? Dolly

Hi Dolly,
Paige received the pnuemococcal vaccine at age 3 by recommendation of our pediatrician. She also received all 4 Prevnars from 2 months thru 18 months. I was worried because I thought that it would be giving her an extra dose of protection that she had already had 4 previous times, but our pediatrician said that Pneumovax only protects against like 12 strains of disease and the pneumococcal protects more than double that.
We went ahead and got it and she had no major side effects - I'm thinking just a little redness around the injection site and a low grade fever for like 24 hrs. It was no big deal.
Now she just turned 4 and I'm panicked again about her second dose of MMR. I know the research shows that MMR has no link w/Autism, but I have heard the symptoms dont show up until after the second dose at age 4. Uggh!
Good luck
Debbie

Derek had this when he was about 16 months and didnt have any adverse effects from it, and also hasnt had any of the diseases that you listed. I do believe that they have to have a booster after 5 years, which means that he is due.
Hugs
Allison

Well, Russell started the Prevnar when we were in CA. But we moved out to IL and we couldn't continue with it. They don't cover it (insurance) here.. EVEN if Russell is "at Risk".. so we never completed it. Now that we are in MO I haven't asked our new Ped yet... hmmm...
