Hi, Im Shawn and I have a 19 month old son with DS. As like all of you feel about your children I to am completely in love with my son. Anyhow, I live in a tiny little town in Colorado and recently found out that according to the district Ryan wont be able to attend the towns only elementary school unless his Iq is above 55. Is this legal? Anyone that could help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Shawn

Hi & welcome Shawn & Ryan!! I have never heard this from my school district - and it doesn't seem fair or legal to me....my daughter is 3 now and we've spoken to the spec.ed director at our school numerous times and he's never mentioned that! It's good you're looking into it so far ahead of time...I'd contact an advocacy group in Colorado - maybe they'd be able to help you. Looking forward to hearing more about you & your little boy! laurie

According to the Principal at our school here they dont even have a special ed. program. She said that all students that need to be placed in special ed. classes or any child that requires an aid will go 20 miles away to another school. Im simply not ok with this. We live less than a mile from our town school it seems absurd that they wont accommadate him. We are looking into this so far ahead of time because of the possibility of having to move because of this issue. It saddens me because I love this community and my other son attends the school here and is doing AWESOME! Thanks for you comments! By the way my son Ryan started taking steps! He is so cute when he tries to walk because one leg doesnt bend. He looks as if that leg is wooden or something. LOL. This is an awesome site, I look forward to chatting with you all! Thanks ShawnS

Shawn, Welcome to UNO!!! We moved less than a year ago and the new school system we moved into CO-OP's with about 7 other school districts. Our school does have a mild program but for all other programs -- moderate to sever they are shipped (bused) out to the larger school corporation. I can say that I really want Collin to attend our local school with my other boys but because of the way their program is ran I am really nervous about putting him in our new school. Sorry forgot to say that because we own 2 houses (one in the larger school system -- head of the co-op) we have chosen to keep Collin in that one for the time being. We may be looking at puting him in our local school when he gets into 1st grade. Connie

Shawn...you need to speak with Judy Martz...she is head of the NDSC and lives in Colorado....I will privately email your her addy...I am sure she can help you...she was a mover and shaker in the Colorado Springs area years ago forming an organization that has had trememdous impact nation wide on inculsion and school issues....Its probably time your district needs to face these issues instead of passing the buck and you have time to get started on this if you want to...otherwise check out the school 20 miles away....sometimes we are faced with difficult issues of being the "guinea pig" so to speak vs plugging into something tried and true and really good but maybe not as convenient. I have always thought that all that time spent on a bus...and 20 miles would probably necessitate that...is not in most kids best interests...but ultimately you will have to check all this out and make your own decisions. Another good resource is the Mile High DS Association in Denver...Emily was born in Denver and we were part of this when it first started years ago and I understand now it has turned into a big and awesome organization....bet they can help too.
