Hi. My 7 month old son has recenlty started to have a hard time with his bowel movements. He goes regularly but is really straining. I haven't changed anything in his diet or mine (he is breast fed and is getting jar food) so I'm not sure what is causing this. Is there anything I can give him to help? I called my ped's office but the nurse said this is normal. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Camille

try jarred prunes or prune juice, Kern's pear or apricot nectar or you can ask your pediatrician about adding a bit of dark Karo syrup to his foods. or even try good old plain water! Go easy at first on any of the fruit or fruit juices as they can be too much and cause the opposite problem :-) Also, you can lay him on his back and do "bicycle" exercises w/ him to help things get moving... laurie

Maggie has had this problem for a long time too.
She eats pears and/or peaches everyday. And she drinks Gerber or Beech Nut 100% pear juice everyday. The doc finally gave us a RX for Miralax which is safe for even babies to use. It's just a stool softner. Plus it disolves in any liquid, so it's easy to give!
The doc told us no apple sauce, no apple juice, no bananas, no cheese, rice cereal or other "binding" food items.
We use oatmeal ceral, pears, peaches and combinations with pears or peaches in them. Since Maggie's started eating more table food, it has helped a lot. She has greenbeans or broccoli, plus other veggies twice a day. Lots of roughage! LOL
Hope that helps.
Drop me a note if you need more info.

I found this ...and think its a good resource on this topic. I am going to check out the pull thru site as Emily had Hirschprungs and the surgery years ago and now has no trouble. www.ds-health.com/constip.htm Jackie

I have to agree with Laurie. My daughter had the same problem and the Karo (used sparingly) and the prunes helped a lot. I know this may sound gross but Natalie's bowel movements would be so hard on her some times that I would need to lay her on her back and insert vasaline so that her movements would have an easier time coming out. It seemed to work like a charm. Good luck and hope it helps! Amy

Hello,
MeKyah(ds) is 6 months and she has a hard time on occassions. She is formula fed and still eat cereal, spoon fed. Her pediatrician recommended apply juice and it works. I only give her 2oz whenever she needs it and it puts her at ease when making a bowel movement.

Hi, My son is 10 months now and also had this same dilema. I can't tell you how funny it was at times when he would grunt loudly while I did bicycle steps to help him get it out! But at the same time, it was painful and I wanted to find help quick. My ped prescribed lactulose, and I used it in his food each day. I also breast fed and his poo never looked like a breast fed babies. Also I did try to get prune juice down him to no avail, but he liked pear juice. Then after some time, it seemed his system adjusted...but also I feed him not as much cereal, or binding things. Mostly veggies, yogurt, some crackers and such fruit ( not bananas or apples). Now he seems to be doing okay. Also we massaged his tummy at times to help him and gave warm baths to relax him and that helped too. Hope it goes well. Love to hear more about your child since so close in age to mine! Debby

Camille, My son also had/has issues with constipation. He would not drink prune juice nor could I disuise it in his milk, he just knew. He is a very finnicky eater so a change in his diet would cause a serious upheaval. His ped put him on Miralax and he hasnt once had a problem since. You just dissolve a little in their milk or whatevver and it truly works like a miracle. Good Luck! Shawn

Our Dr. has perscribed MiraLax for our four year old son. This has really helped his constipation. We put a teaspoon in his juice. This had helped with his potty training also.
