Okay, been stressing about the whole speech thing, and I know I'm in good company here. But this is blowing me away. At 22 months, Ethan coud not say (OR SIGN!) anything. I was getting pretty worried. We knew that he has some pretty involved motor planning issues, so we've been working on those. He started saying a few words a couple of months ago, and that was awesome, but suddenly he has just taken off with trying new words!
He says "up, down, night-night, bye-bye, Mama, Daddy, Nick, kitty, eat, " and lots more, but today was the kicker. I was driving to Rite-Aid to fill his reflux prescription (the pharmacy is across the street from McDonald's) and he looked across the street and said "fre-fry!". I couldn't believe it. We went right over and got some fries, let me tell ya! I am soooooo thrilled, and I knew this was just the place to share it! Wooo hooooo!!!!!

Laura,
Thats Terrrific!!! I bet you almost fell out of your seat when he mentioned the fries...not only did he say the word, but he associated the fries with the place...thats using your "noodle" (as PP&J would say). I know what you mean about the speech thing...I think about it constantly. Eric doesn't say too many words...Dad, duck, hi, bye, ball, and he seems so frustrated. I have used the love and learning tapes intermittently and they really seem to help. Eric just loves them. And he can recognize about 15 words from the flash cards. (he does his little motions for each word, like if the card says "rocking" then he starts rocking back and forth). Now if only we can get that little tongue to start forming the words....Oh, well, it will come in time. Congratulations again, and give him a big kiss and hug from us here in Ohio...Dolly

I know what you mean. I remember pulling into Wendys and hearing Bench Bye, Mom, Bench Bye and he repeated it until I acknowledged I'd get him some ;D I know how excited you must have been! What they won't do for french fries. He'd rather have the fries and skip the chicken

How wonderful.......... ;D Erica's mom you mention "using your noodle" (PB&J ) that is soooooo funny because that is what we are waatching right now... Back to Ethan.....that is just great that he is taking off and saying new words..Kourtney tries so hard and he speech is hard to understand at times and we work hard with her as well..So, happy for you...Now he knows how to tell you "fre-fry" you'll hear that one everytime you pass a Mickey D's...Great knews I would be proud as a peathingy too ;D

Yeahhh!!!
O.K. if you have time, start a binder with sheet protectors. Get pictures of french fries and label them. Add them to the binder. Let your son look at the binder whenever he wants. This is pre-reading. And, it's stuff he is interested in - a powerful combination.
It also lets him know that forming a word will get him places and things he couldn't have before.
Very exciting times at your house!

Congratulations to Ethan! He will soon learn that language is power. I must be a bad mom. Sarah has never even had a french fry or eaten at McDonald's. Chris

Woo hoo! I'm not only proud of his talking, but wanting to eat! I remember when we talked last year and he was just starting to put things in his mouth!
Oh, how I can't wait to not only hear french fry, but see my baby eat one!
By the way, I took away the sippy cup today! So far so good. She really worked on her daddy trying to get it back. But, I set my foot down. She does fine with straws and open cups, so we need to get on with life.
If I could just get my husband to quit doing things the "easy way"! Ugh!
I'd love to hear more about Dr. MacDonald. Please share! Speech and feeding are our #1 issues right now.
Help!
