I'm a first time poster. Just happened upon the site while surfing for information on Downs. I and my husband were blessed with our son, Nicholas, on August 2, 2002. As I was 40 at the time of the pregnancy, I opted for the amnio and three weeks later learned that Nicholas would have Downs. I realize that some parents would prefer not to be aware of the diagnosis before birth, but knowing gave my husband and I months to research and prepare. This also gave us the opportunity to experience the great joy of his birth and not have it overshadowed by a sudden jolt of doom.
Although Nicholas had some minor heart issues at birth, they did not require surgery and his first year was a breeze...medically. We have not been so lucky this year. This winter has proved to be a nightmare for us with Nicholas catching every little bug that floated by him. He's been diagnosed with Asthma and last month hospitalized with pneumonia aggravated by the Ashtma condition. Our pulmonologist has encouraged us with news that with the cold and flu season hopefully behind us, things will settle down.
At any rate, I am so glad to have stumbled on to this website as I have just scratched the surface of the postings and have already seen several topics that have related to our experiences and challenges. I can't wait to really dive in. Of course, I'm sure it will take me some time to get the hang of it (what are those darling little faces at the top of the Post Message screen!!)
Thanks for creating this website!

Welcome Nicksmom! Finding this website was one of the best things I have come accross since the birth of my daughter Natalie (4 yrs). I find it very helpful to talk with other parents and share their experiances. As far as that phenomia goes...well my daughter just simply had to grow out of it. She had it once and sometimes twice a year until she turned 4. Needless to say we got to know the nurses quite well at the hospital. But any how I look forward to seeing you on here and sharing stories with you. Amy

Welcome Nicks Mom. I stumbled into this great website only a month or so ago and I just love it. My daughter MeKyah turned 6months 5/12/04. My husband and I both were 35 but did not take an amio. We found out at birth that she had ds and pulmonary hypertention in the lungs. She was hospitalized for 1 1/2 months. Today, she is doing really well. Needless to say those lungs works very well now. She is our only child and I have a teenage step son. Not sure if we will have another one yet. We're just enjoying Kyah right now. She is truley a blessing to us. Look forward to hearing more from you. Jeannette
