Derek woke up this morning with a crusty ear. It looks like fluid and dried blood. He has never had this before (his third set of tubes). Anyone know why it would jsut start draining all of a sudden??

Allison,
The most likely cause is infection - get him to doc or ENT and have him checked out. When did he get his tubes in?
Sarah is on her 5th set of tubes and this has happened to her twice and both times it was due to infection, anti-b drops sorted it out. The first time it happened she had the tubes in about 2 months, second time it was in the 6 week post-op period.
Good Luck and let us know the outcome.

Maggie's had brown/red yucky stuff around her ear, in her hair, everywhere, when she had tubes. Both times it was an ear infection and he rx'd drops. Simple enough.
We don't have that problem now, but it was scary the first time it happened to us! Hope it clears up soon.
Take care

Thanks for the replies. The doc put Derek on Keflex so hopefully that works. There is literally pus pouring out of his ear. Hopefully it starts to get better soon, although he isnt really showing any symptoms thankfully.

That drainage is pretty gross, but it's actually a sign that the tubes are doing their job. Just think, if your sweetie didn't have the tubes, all of that pus would be sitting there in the ear, causing pressure (pain) and making it hard for him to hear. Also, it could have been a couple more days before you ever realized he had an infection. Those tubes saved him from lots of pain and discomfort!!

Wow, glad to see we are not the only ones who have this problem....Evertime Kourtney gets and ear infection her ears drain, and my ped said the same thing be glad that the tubes are doing ther job, she never complains of pain she will look and say "Oh, my ear! and there it will be but mostly when she sleeps at night and it never happens unless she has an infection which hasn't been that often...Everytime they look in ther and the tubes are still in place
