Hello! I am a new member. I am so glad I stumbled upon this website. I have a son, Josiah 11 months, with ds. He is my only child. I just have been learning as I go along about parenting, ds, and etc...So far my major concern is hearing. He will be getting hearing aids on Monday. Has anyone else experience this?

Well, of course, I shouldn't say it, but it looks like I'm not alone in not knowing much about some topics. But here are some links you might explore: www.babyhearing.org/HearingAmplification/AidChoices/evaluated.aspwww.advanceforaud.com/resources/AA70102_P14.pdfwww.kennedykrieger.org/kki_misc.jsp?pid=2122www.ds-health.com/abst/a0112.htmThe first one looks particularly rich. Could go back to its home page and navigate about. Lots of kids, maybe 60% or more, with Ds have some hearing loss. I know some kids who wear hearing aids part or full time. There doesn't seem to be lots here on Uno Mas, but you could search the archives of the ol' Down-syn list, listserv.nodak.edu/archives/down-syn.html , and find lots of questions, answers, stories of kids hiding their hearing aids, flushing them down the toilet, and other scary tales. You've got lots to look forward too. Sorry I know more, but not much, about contact lenses than hearing aids. Best of luck, Bob, dad to Charlie (Ds almost 5) and Robert (not Ds, almost 11 mos.)

My little Character aka Christopher ;D also has hearing aids, he got them last year when he was 10. The one here to talk to about hearing aids is ROBIN M. she is very knowledgable on the subject ;D Although Christopher was older when he got them I have to say I never ever thought he would keep them in but as always he proved me wrong, LOL and not only keeps them in he puts them in himself every day at school Looking forward to hearing more bout you and yours. CC

Dear JMom, So glad you found UNOMAS 21! Isn't it great?!!! Welcome! Can't wait to hear more about your family. MY daughter Maggie is 3, has DS and has profound (left) and moderate/severe hearing loss in her right ear. She wears digital hearing aids and has done fine. I'm going to give you a list of websites that I have found very helpful. Please drop my a message on UNOMAS and I'll get you my email. We can chat about all the fun stuff! To do that, you click on my highlighted name to the left of my post, it will go to my "personal page" at UNOMAS 21. Go to the bottom where it says, leave this member a message, and go from there. I'll try sending you one. Look at the very top of the page when you log on to the Bulletin Board and you should see..."Hey jmom, you have 1 message and 1 is new." Click on the hightlighted "messages" and it will take you to it. Whew!! If you have any questions, just ask. Everyone here is very helpful! www.agbell.orgwww.listen-up.orgwww.beginningssvcs.com/communications_options/comm_options_chart.htmwww.auditory-verbal.org www.hearingexchange.comwww.justbekuz.comwww.jtc.org/index.htm (We are enrolled in their correspondence class - it's great! and easy!) www.missouriiojd.org/HIKE/ The Lion's Club is great about helping obtain hearing aids too. Hope that helps! Robin M - Maggie's mom
