Sometimes we just dont appreciate our kids maturity or acknowledge their common sense. I have to share this FUNNY with you all. This morning I was visiting by phone with Emily and telling her to have Norine check out the email Katie (Ems sister) is sending her about times for her to catch a plane to Katie’s house next month. Norine might not be in town on the return date so I was asking Em if she was comfortable with Brandon ( a guy who is living with Norines family this summer) meeting her at the baggage claim in Houston. She said yes…so I then asked if Brandon had a cell phone. She again said…yes. Then I went on and said … “Well when you get off the plane just try to follow the signs to baggage claim and if you get lost then just phone Brandon and see if he can come find you.”…Emily replied “ok” and then said……”or I can just ask someone where baggage claim is?” SCORE ONE FOR EMILY….LOL. ; Jackie...Mom to Emily 24 in Houston

;D OH EM.... Tell your momma you know EXACTLY what your doing...LOL...BTW the house is pretty she is gonna take care of... Ya know Liv knows much more than I sometimes give her credit for. LOL... Although with her INTENSE curiosity and excellent verbal and social skills i am finding that people think she can do WAYYYYY more academically than she can they think she is way further ahead than she is. But boy Liv bops it to me sometimes... then I laugh at how I OVEREXPLAIN and she has a MUCH SIMPLER more direct way of thinking about it/// LOL.. HEY JACKIE LIVS insulin went from 207 to 25. Can you stand it????I'M SOOO HAPPY BUT WE ARE GONNA incorporate her diet for the rest of her life here so that it becomes the norm for her. She asked for a sugar free candy in kindy this morn so here's to progress... THANKS for all your help with this.AND you ED and EM have inspired my mom and dad to go on the Atkins. Like my mom needs it she is 5'7 and 139 lbs and feels fat. BUT they are lookibng good. I showed em your results on UNO and they were impressed and started 2 weeks ago... HUGS STEFF

You know...of all the things Em does...her air travel by herself stresses me out the most . I can't decide if it's because of the DS or because of the World Situation. When she used to fly from Texas to NYC at the tender age of 11 to go to camp in PA (we got aide and assist then from American)...I used to worry what would happen if she got lose from the airline people. My kids assured me she would go seek help or just plunk herself down and cry ....in which case she would also get help....so guess this is just a more grown up version of the same kid. I could probably get her the same sort of help she needed like people do when transporting old and sick people....but she seems to be able to do this on her own....but has really only tried it on SW.....I get confused in airports like DFW and I fly there all the time.

Wow, She is truly amazing and such an inspiration to the rest of us who have young children and wondering what the future holds for our children. When I first started reading Unomas, Emily was going to college and it was so inspiring for me. My little guy, Andrew, is now 6 years old and amazing me everyday with his abilities.
Jackie, I've been trying to reach you and sent you an e-mail that I found on the website. I don't know if you got it or not but I wanted to let you know that I live near Seabrook and would love to meet Emily. I also have some information for you on groups in the area for friendships for her. Please let me know if you are interested.

Thank you all....Emily is constantly a source of amazement to me and I am afraid I am often guilty of selling her short. I guess we ALL want our kids to excell and to some extent have others AWARE of what they can do. As I have told you all before, Em is rather quiet...never toots her own horn...doesnt really want to be the center of attention....and I sometimes tend to equate "charisma" with ability. At conferences I watch the so called 'superstars' with great admiration and some (yes I admit) green eyed envy......then I come down to earth and realize altho Emily is NOT up there at the podium....she probably could be with all she has done. What is most important to me is that Emily is living a live SHE wants to live ...not one I am forcing her into...and doing the things SHE wants to do...not things I want her to do just to prove a point. I am happy if her life is an example in independence to others...and none of us in our family want to wear gold stars for helping her achieve this.
I will tell you, however, it is a TWO WAY street....as a parent you have to learn to let go...take some risks...grit your teeth....have a few angst headaches....and try to stop doing what I was doing....making everything failsafe. Because in this world we ALL learn from our mistakes. I think out of love we often PROTECT our kids with DS too much and that makes them ever so much more VUNERABLE when they do try their wings if they think someone will always be there to pick them up. I have been scared to fly by myself ever since I was little. I am 23 now and still scared. I will not do it, I would get lost!
I think it is so great the Emily flys alone. WTG Emily!
