Chandler (age 5, almost 6) has recently started gagging and spitting out his food. He really an not afford to lose ANY weight (he only weighs 38 lbs.). I can't decide if this is just a "phase" or if something might really be wrong. He spits out food he used to LOVE. At first, I thought maybe he was taking too big of a bite, but that doesn't seem to be it either. He knows not to spit it out, but it's like he can't help it. And it's not just one type of food althought he doesn't seem to have a problem with ice cream or cake. Right now, he is eating basically cheese toast and spaghetti (and ice cream & cake of course). He's never been an especially picky eater either. Any ideas?

Could he possibly have acid reflux? I just found out Sarah has reflux but I never suspected it because she never spit up like other kids I have known with reflux. Sarah has always had feeding difficulties but no sensory issues.

It's weird that it just started like that. Seems like something happened that may have triggered it. Say a sore throat, mouth ulcers, loose tooth, something!
I think I'd have him checked out by a doc first and rule out anything "simple".
Maggie has sensory issues, but they've been there since the day she was born pratically. Not that we knew that's what was going on. It took us two years and several OT's to figure it out. But we did.
When we find that Maggie's gagging, we take a step back and go to things we know she will eat without gagging. Do that for a day or two, then start adding ONE thing back a day until she's back up to par.
With Maggie, this usually happens when I've pushed her too far in trying to get her to eat something that is toally different than before.
Good luck. Keep us posted.

Chase has sensory issues with eating also but his didnt start til he was about three. He wouldnt eat a casserole for nothing! Lots of other things too but it has gotten ALOT better with age. He was so thin, I was worried about him all the time also, he wighted 48 pounds at age 10 but alas, he now is 12 and weighs 89 pounds! I think I would take him in for a check up just to be sure there is nothing wrong, our kids are so not good at telling us when they are in pain or something is wrong. And if everything checks out okay, just feed him alot of his favorites and eventually he'll break or you'll be really good at baking his favorite cake I'll cross my fingers there is nothing wrong and it will go away as fast as it came on. hugs, Robin

My Nicole has sensory issues. She has had them since birth. It was all over her body. She is 4 and still only eats fork mashed food. She has started eatting pieces of bread and cheese lately. Seems to me that something did not settle right when your child was eating that causes him to react this way. I suggest seeing an OT and a Doctor first before deciding your child might have sensory issues.
